Track notebook: 14 teams set for Redbird Relays

The Redbird Relays are scheduled to return to Cardinal Stadium today despite a forecast for more cold, wet weather.

An all-weather surface was installed at the track at Webb City High School last year. The field events are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., and the running events are scheduled for 4 p.m.

Among the schools in the 14-team field are College Heights, Thomas Jefferson, Carl Junction, Galena, Neosho, McDonald County and Webb City.

Webb City’s boys placed fourth overall at the Carthage Invitational last Thursday, led by Logan Williams, a senior who won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, and Alec Harmell, who won the pole vault.

Webb City’s girls were sixth, led by Sammi White, who won the 100, and Natalie Capron, who won the 3200.

Thomas Jefferson’s Chris Saladin is coming off a victory in the 3200 at the Galena Bulldog Invitational. He placed second to Ryan Beaver of College Heights in the 1600.

Five teams at Lamar

Lamar’s track meet scheduled for Tuesday has been expanded to five teams, said boys head coach Rodney Baldridge.

Nevada, Ash Grove, Liberal and Humansville will join the host Tigers for the meet that begins at 4 p.m.

Lamar’s track season got off to a fast start last Thursday at the Ash Grove Pirate Classic. The Tigers won 11 of 18 events in winning the boys’ division and also captured the girls’ team championship.

Ben Bailey and Sam Bailey placed 1-2 in the discus, and teammates Austin Boice and Keenan Begley were 1-2 in the shot put.

Cade Payne won the 100 and 400, Drew Buckner won the 800 and 1600, Kaden Overstreet won the 3200 and Lamar won all four relay events.

On the girls’ side, Katelyn Luce won the pole vault, Kaelyn Sturgell won the 300 hurdles, and Lamar won the 4x200 relay with a team of Erica Cleveland, Sturgell, Kylie Regal and Chynna Moore.

Win for Labette County

Labette County won the boys’ division of the Labette County Invitational held Thursday at Altamont. Iola was second, Coffeyville was third and Columbus was sixth.

Chanute won the girls’ division, followed by Coffeyville and Fredonia. Labette County was seventh and Columbus was 10th.
