PREP ROUNDUP: Eagles hold off Neosho

Joplin controlled the first half and survived a strong second half by Neosho and Darrian Guillory in claiming a 64-53 win in nonconference prep basketball on Tuesday night.

Joplin improved to 9-3 and will open the Chanute Ralph Miller Classic at 3 p.m. on Thursday against Shawnee Heights.

Said Joplin coach Jeff Williams: “Give Neosho credit. They played on top of their game in the second half. We didn’t get done what we wanted and that’s close the game at half. They kept hitting shots. Guillory went crazy. He was just outstanding in the post.

“It was a team combination,” Williams said of the first half (a 37-16 halftime lead for the Eagles). “We played good defense. Daniel Stokes hit a couple of 3s. Offensively, he had been struggling.”

Said Neosho coach Jason Horn: “Obviously, Joplin had a good start. We came fighting back and trailed by just four points with 90 seconds left. We couldn’t keep the ball out of Charlie Brown’s hands. He sealed the deal at the free-throw line.”

Brown, a 6-foot-1 junior, scored 24 points and Adam St. Peter added 10. Guillory, a 6-2 freshman, had 27 of his 31 in the second half.

McAuley girls 46, Sarcoxie 39

SARCOXIE, Mo. — Victoria Foley scored 16 points for McAuley Catholic to lead the Warriors past Sarcoxie in the Sarcoxie Tournament.

Sarcoxie led 22-12 at halftime, but McAuley rallied to win the second half 32-17.

McAuley’s Kambrey Wagner added 12 points.

Janelle Depreeste led Sarcoxie with 11.

EXETER GIRLS 30, COLLEGE HEIGHTS 23

Exeter came out on top over College Heights in a low-scoring affair that didn’t have a player post double figures in the Sarcoxie Tournament.

Rayanna Fare and Bailey Bowman scored nine and eight points, respectively, for Exeter. Bri Shores and Kirsty Green had nine and eight, respectively, for College Heights.
