ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —
Coming off losses in their past three road games, the Pittsburg State Gorillas men’s basketball team defeated Missouri Western 57-56 on Wednesday night at the MWSU Fieldhouse.
Pittsburg State (13-5, 7-4 MIAA) rallied from a second-half deficit to build a 57-54 lead with 1:25 left. The Gorillas missed three free throws in the game’s final 25 seconds but were able to hold on for the win.
The tight game included 11 lead changes and eight ties.
Rico Pierrevilus led the Gorillas with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kaleb Porter (13), Marky Nolen (12) and Courtney Ingram (11) also scored in double figures for PSU.
Pitt State’s defense limited Missouri Western (8-11, 4-7 MIAA) to 17-of-53 shooting from the field.
The Griffons were led by Cedric Clinkscales with 15 points.
Missouri Western women 70, Pittsburg State 65
Missouri Western rallied for an MIAA victory over the Pittsburg State Gorillas on Wednesday night.
The Griffons used a 10-0 run to turn a 58-53 deficit with 5:32 left into a 63-58 lead with 1:12 remaining.
Missouri Western (13-6, 6-5 MIAA) benefited from a balanced scoring attack as four players reached double figures. Six-foot-3 senior forward Heather Howard led the Griffons with 15 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. JaQuitta Dever, Brittany Griswold and Alicia Bell added 14, 14 and 11 points, respectively.
The Griffons flourished inside with 36 points in the paint.
Pittsburg State (12-6, 6-4 MIAA) shot 47.1 percent (8-for-17) on 3-pointers, but the Gorillas committed 16 turnovers. Missouri Western turned the turnovers into 17 points.
Lizzy Jeronimus led the Gorillas with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Morgan Westhoff scored 14 off the bench.
The Gorillas will close out their three-game road trip against Washburn at 5 p.m. Saturday in Topeka. The men are scheduled to follow at 7 p.m.
