Jasper High School senior Landon Osborn signed a national football letter of intent with Kansas Wesleyan of Salina on Monday.
Bob Saunders, offensive coordinator for the Coyotes, came to Jasper for the signing of the 6-foot-1, 165-pound safety.
“Landon also was a really good specialty teams player,” Jasper coach Richie Adkins said. “He helped us some at receiver. He improved a lot during his senior season.
“Landon probably will stay at safety — maybe move to cornerback — in college,” Adkins said.
“He isn’t that big,” Adkins said. “But he plays very physical. He’s very coachable.”
Salina is some four hours away, Osborn said, in north-central Kansas. The community is some 50,000 people and is about 80 miles north of Wichita and 165 miles west of Kansas City.
“The Kansas Wesleyan campus is nice and kind of small.” Osborn said of a visit. “I like the smallness.”
Landon, the son of Heather and Lonnie Osborn, is eyeing a career as a physical therapist or trainer.
NAIA Kansas Wesleyan is coming off a 6-5 overall record in 2012. The Coyotes were 5-3 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Dave Dallas is in his 17th season as head coach at Wesleyan after eight with Ottawa in the KCAC. Saunders is the son of former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders.
“I’m hoping to play as a freshman,” Osborn said. “I know it will be a challenge. But they do have a junior varsity team. I’m not sure how many games the junior varsity will play.”
