PITTSBURG, Kan. —
Two Columbus Titans wrestlers captured Class 4A regional championships on Saturday at Pittsburg High School.
Columbus’ Taylor Watkins won the 152-pound division with a 10-2 major decision over Coffeyville’s Derek Frost. In the 195-pound division, Gavin Houser beat Fort Scott’s John Metcalf in a 7-4 decision.
Watkins and Houser both earned return trips to this weekend’s 4A wrestling tournament in Salina after earning medals last year. Teammates Derek Creel (120), Zack Roark (160) and Jace McDown (170) also will be going to state after placing in the top four of their respective weight divisions at the regional.
Pittsburg’s Gershom Avalos won at 220 pounds by defeating Iola’s Stephen McDonald on an injury default. Purple Dragons Levi Kester (106), Jeremiah Jones (113), Joey Wools (120), Brett Cobb (132), and Ivan Carrell-Beasly (195) will be joining Avalos at state.
Frontenac’s Tanner Craig advanced to state by placing third in the 138-pound division.
Chanute led the team standings with 164 points. Pittsburg was fourth with 136, while Columbus was sixth with 102 and Frontenac was 12th with 36.5.
