Grant Young, girls basketball coach at Purdy High School, has been digging frequently these days through the MSHSAA Records & Yearbook.
It’s the section about 3-point field goals and Addy Roller, the Eagles’ 5-foot-8 senior, can be blamed for all that extra reading by Young.
Roller may have several lines in the publication before she’s finished.
First, Young said Sunday, Roller needs four more treys to supplant Michelle Holman as the career leader. Holman amassed 285 playing for Dadeville in 1994-97. Roller is at 282 with freshman-through-senior totals of 69, 60, 71 and 82.
Young said Roller has attempted 736 treys to 791 for Holman. That’s a 38.3 percent effort by Roller, Young said.
The leader in treys made per game is 2.74 by Kearney’s Jenny Ghidoni. Young believes Roller has a shot with a 2.6 average in 108 games.
The Eagles are scheduled to visit Wheaton tonight for an Ozark 7 Conference varsity doubleheader. The three-game program will tip off at 5:30 with the boys junior varsity contest.
Roller & mates will visit Fair Grove for a nonconference test on Thursday with the junior varsity game at 6 p.m.
Roller suffered a high ankle strain against Washburn Southwest on Feb. 3. Young said, but it didn’t seem to hamper her on Friday: 35 points in 18 minutes against McAuley Catholic.
Roller, who’s signed with NCAA Division II nationally-ranked Wayne State (Neb.), has led Purdy to records of 18-4 overall and 7-0 in the Ozark 7.
Young and assistant Jennifer Schallert are pleased with that record considering they lost five seniors from a Class 2 state championship team (26-6, 9-1 league co-champions with Verona).
“We started the season slowly,” Young said. “But we picked up confidence in going 2-1 in the Aurora Tournament. We started in the conference well. The 3-1 finish at Neosho (its Holiday Classic) propelled us into the second part of the season.”
The nine Purdy players have started games this season, Young said, with a current top six consisting of Roller, fellow seniors Kristyn Cornman. Taylor Moller and Rachael Neill, and juniors Katie Hughes and Mattie White.
Ninth-graders Jayse Henderson, Billie House and Kat Hughes complete the nine.
Roller, who’s hitting 87 percent of her free throws, sports averages of 26.3 points, 6 assists and 3.6 steals.
White is averaging 9.5 points and 9.3 rebounds.
Roller, who solved Verona for seven treys this season (five in the first quarter), has passed Becky Woods (formerly Fly and Missouri Southern player) and Shelby White (freshman at Drury) to lead in career points at Purdy. Roller is at 2,146 overall and 579 this campaign.
Roller helped the Eagles post records of 20-7 and 23-5 before 2010-11.
