Seneca sends seven to state wrestling

— Seneca survived the Class 2, District 3 tournament at Clinton and advanced seven wrestlers to the state tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

Seneca was fourth in the team standings, 14.5 points behind district champion Odessa in a tightly bunched field. Monett was sixth and Nevada was seventh.

“We knew going in we were going to have to have some pins and probably get some help from other schools,” said Seneca head coach Jeff Sill.

Will Roark, a freshman at 113 pounds, and Logan Grady, a junior at 132, won district championships. Both will face wrestlers from the St. Louis area who the Indians haven’t seen this season in the first round of the state tournament.

“There are a lot of state placers and ultimate champions who come out of our district,” Sill said. “We had a couple of other kids in the bubble round who wrestled hard. We don’t have anything to hang our heads about.”

Monett’s Chase Brennan at 106 and Chris Renteria at 138, both defending state champions, won district titles and advanced along with three teammates.

Nevada senior Tanner Charles won the title at 126 by pinning Ty Cochran of Harrisonville in 14 seconds.

Some tough matchups await wrestlers from all three schools in the first round of the state tournament.

Monett junior Devon Overall at 160 is up against Cody Stevens of Dexter, a senior who has lost twice this season. Nevada’s Johnathon Ireland, a sophomore, drew defending state champion Austin Roper of Kirksville, and Seneca’s Bryce Byrne at 145 will face unbeaten Adam McMain of Cameron.

“We just take one match at a time. Our schedule is tough,” Sill said. “We see some tough kids from Omaha (Neb.) Skutt or from Texas. We don’t get wound up about preparing for one match.”

Diamond advanced six wrestlers to the Class 1 tournament but will see some difficult opponents as well. Jordan Douglas, a junior at 138, drew unbeaten senior Karson Hill of Trenton.
