Carthage strikes early, whips Willard in playoffs

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Carthage scored twice within the first eight minutes of the match in beating Willard 5-0 in the sectional round of the MSHSAA Class 2 soccer playoffs on Tuesday night.

Carthage, which beat Willard 2-0 during the regular season in the Central Ozark Conference Large Division, improved to 20-8 and will entertain Rolla on Saturday in the quarterfinal round at the Fair Acres Sports Complex.

Rolla, from the Ozark Conference, eliminated Washington St. Francis Borgia 2-0 on Monday night.

Willard, which finished 15-10, was outshot 20-2, according to Carthage statistics.

“I wasn’t expecting a margin of 5-0,” Carthage coach Jacob Osborne said. “Goals are hard to come by at this time of the year.”

Said Willard coach Tim Magee: “Give Carthage credit. Those two (early) goals set us back. But I thought we actually played better this time than last and our goalie (Carter Havens) had some outstanding saves. But Carthage was on a different level.”

Carthage led 3-0 at the half on goals by senior Ismael Serratos, an own goal (credit the Willard goalie with an error) and senior Jose DelVal. Erik Estrada, another senior, assisted on the first goal that came at less than a minute. DelVal’s goal came at the eight-minute mark.

Osborne told his players at halftime to at least tie the second half.

“We wanted to win the second half, of course,” Osborne said. “We wanted to possess the ball.”

Serratos, Carthage’s career scoring leader, and junior Jonas Smith had goals in the second half. Junior Henry Oxlaj assisted on the Smith goal.

“The defense did a good job,” Osborne said. “Our backs did a good job of communicating and winning balls.”

Carthage statistics had its goalie — Jose Alberto — with one save. Fellow junior Havens had seven for Willard.
