Missouri Western rallies to top Northwest for MIAA title

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Missouri Western erased a 17-point halftime deficit and scored with just over a minute remaining to beat Northwest Missouri 21-20 on Saturday at Bearcat Stadium to clinch the school’s first outright MIAA title.

The Griffons finish the regular season 10-1 overall and 9-1 in the MIAA, their lone loss coming to Missouri Southern. Northwest finishes 9-2 overall and 8-2 in the league.

Western’s Michael Hill rushed for 121 yards on 19 carries. His 10-yard run set up Travis Partridge’s game-winning two-yard score at 1:07 and gave him the school’s all-team lead in single-season rushing yards with 1,848.

Northwest scored 17 second-quarter points to take control at the half. Trevor Adams hit Tyler Shaw for a 6-yard touchdown pass and Jordan Simmons scored on a 2-yard run before Todd Adolf hit a 22-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in the half.

Western’s Tyron Crockom cut that to 17-7 with a 19-yard pass from Partridge with 5:35 left in the third quarter before Adolf stretched the lead to 20-7 with a 43-yarder with just 7:06 left in the game.

But that’s when the Griffons responded.

Partridge hit Tarrell Downing for a 38-yard touchdown pass that capped a six-play, 75-yard drive with 5:08 remaining.

Western then forced the Bearcats to punt and the Griffons drove 66 yards on eight plays in 2:09 for the game winner.

The Bearcats drove near midfield before turning it over on downs to end the game.
