Bearcats rally past Missouri Southern

BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Southwest Baptist Bearcats used a three-run eighth inning to beat the Missouri Southern Lions baseball team 5-4 Friday in Bolivar.

Missouri Southern fell to 25-16 overall and 19-14 in the MIAA with the loss.

Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the eighth, Southwest Baptist’s Christian Binger tied the game with a two-run single. Later in the inning, Spencer Blacksher singled through the left side to give the Bearcats a 5-4 lead.

Brett Abell started the game for the Lions, pitching 7 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and four earned runs.

Both teams were scoreless going into the fifth inning. Missouri Southern scored two runs in the top of the fifth. Thomas Wilson singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Nick Doughty. Shaun Hoover singled to put runners on first and second. Zack Steadman added an infield single to load the bases for Dallas Burke, who responded with a two-run single.

Southwest Baptist (19-21, 17-15) scored a pair of runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game before Southern went back ahead with a run in the sixth when Will Wagner homered to start the inning.

The Lions added another run in the eighth to go up 4-2 when Tee Helsel scored on a wild pitch.

Steadman was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Lions. Burke was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Dustin Caplette earned the win for the Bearcats, and Jacob Sullinger recorded the save.

David Reese suffered the loss for Missouri Southern.

The Lions and Bearcats will finish the series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.
