Jason Bromley had sent Missouri State an impressive highlight reel, a video full of the Cassville senior booming kickoffs, blasting punts and drilling field goals.
But Terry Allen just hadn't found the time to watch it. Missouri State's new football coach had other things to do, like assembling a coaching staff and recruiting players for his quarterback, running back and linebacker positions.
One day, though, Allen and Cassville coach David Large ran into each other at a coaching clinic. Large had one message, one request, for Allen: Look at the tape.
"Once they watched the video, I think it was all good," said Bromley, a second-team all-state kicker.
Bromley committed to Missouri State on Monday, turning down several Division I opportunities and accepting an offer to join the Bears as a preferred walk-on.
The 6-foot, 190-pound kicker enters a wide open situation in Springfield. Jon Scifres graduated last season, and the kicking job for the 2006 season is up for grabs.
"There's going to be some great competition, and the coaches have told me that I'll just as much of a chance as anyone to earn the spot," Bromley said.
Large said the Bears would be lucky to have Bromley, who plans on majoring in construction management, starting at kicker.
"Jason is just an incredible young man," Large said. "He has not only been a great student-athlete the last four years, he has also been a great role model for young people here in the Cassville community."
Bromley took care of punting and shared kicking duties for 11-1 Cassville. He kicked five field goals, including a school-record boot of 44 yards. Bromley also had 44 touchbacks.
He plans on attending several camps and will help Cassville's current kickers this summer.
"I want to get more accurate and I want to get stronger," Bromley said. "I'll be five yards back so it won't be as easy to get touchbacks.
"I'm just really looking forward to getting up there and fighting for playing time."
