PURDY, Mo. — Derek Dailey’s strong outing and an early two-run single from Trent Goetz led Purdy to a 4-2 baseball victory against Pierce City on Monday.

Dailey, Purdy’s fourth starter, threw a complete game, allowing an earned run on six hits and a walk. He struck out five and improved to 2-1.

Purdy (12-7) took the lead in the second inning on Chris Bennett’s RBI double. Goetz’s single then drove two home.

Goetz finished 2-for-4 and Blake Williams was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Brady Hayward was 2-for-3 for Pierce City (11-7).

Eagles soccer team gets third seed

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Joplin High School’s girls soccer team has been seeded third in the MSHSAA Class 2 District 12 Tournament scheduled next week at Kickapoo.

Kickapoo and Ozark, seeded first and second respectively, have byes in the six-team tourney.

Joplin will debut against Parkview at 5 p.m. Monday. Fourth-seeded Neosho then faces Nixa at 7 to complete the opening round matchups.

Semifinals will be played at 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 15. The championship match is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 17.

JYFA schedules registration dates

The Joplin Youth Football Association has set its only registration dates for the fall 2007 youth football season. Registration will begin inside Kaminsky Gymnasium on May 18 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and conclude May 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The registration fee is $55 per player.

In the inaugural year for JYFA last season, the association successfully formed youth football teams to represent Joplin against towns in the Southwest Conference. In 2007, teams will be expected to play seven or eight games plus a week of playoffs.

Official sizing and weigh-ins will take place during equipment check-out July 30-31. Practices are slated to begin Aug. 1 while games start Sept. 1.

Crowder’s title tilt moved to Branson

MOBERLY, Mo. — Rain and wet grounds have forced a site change for the championship round of the NJCAA Division I Region 16 softball playoffs.

Crowder will play Jefferson College or St. Charles at noon today at the Branson RecPlex. Another game, if needed, will follow in the double-elimination event.

Jefferson and St. Charles were scheduled to play in the losers’ bracket final Monday in St. Louis.

Crowder defeated Jefferson College 3-0 on Sunday to claim the winners’ bracket.

Hawkins wins model A feature

NEVADA, Mo. — Neosho’s Chris Hawkins won the late model A feature on the stock car racing program at the Nevada Speedway on Saturday night.

Hawkins beat Donnie Timmerman of El Dorado Springs. Joplin drivers Marty Danner, Shannon Phillips and Micheal Wilson finished fourth, eighth and ninth, respectively.

Completing the main event winners at the 1/4-mile dirt track were Craig Wood, El Dorado Springs, modified; Zach Marsh, Fort Scott, street stock; Cody Elnicki, Girard, factory stock, and Scott Mohlfeld, Liberal, mini stock.

Crowder College draws No. 2 seed

KANSAS CITY — Crowder College of Neosho is the No. 2 seed for the NJCAA Division I Region 16 baseball playoffs scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Maple Woods Community College.

Jefferson College of Hillsboro is seeded first among the seven teams and has a first-round bye.

Thursday’s schedule is fourth-seeded Meramec vs. Three Rivers at 10:30 a.m., Crowder vs. Maple Woods at 1 p.m. and third-seeded St. Charles vs. Mineral Area at 3:30.

Friday’s three-game session begins at 9 a.m.

Finals start at 11 a.m. Sunday with the title contest set for 2 p.m.

Purdy seeded first in District 10

PURDY, Mo. — Host Purdy is the No. 1-seeded prep baseball team for the MSHSAA Class 2 District 10 Tournament scheduled next week.

The schedule Monday is Southwest at Purdy at noon, Diamond vs. second-seeded Sarcoxie at 2 p.m., College Heights vs. No. 3 Lamar at 4 and McAuley Catholic vs. fourth-seeded Pierce City at 6.

Semifinals are at 4 and 6 p.m. May 15. The championship will be decided at 5:30 p.m. May 17.
