12 teams entered

in Mantle Classic

COMMERCE, Okla. — The heavy rains have produced a revised schedule for the ninth annual Mickey Mantle Wooden Bat Classic.

The 12-team, four-division tournament originally was scheduled to last Tuesday through Saturday on Mickey Mantle Field at Commerce High School.

Tournament director Brian Waybright hopes to utilize the Mickey Mantle Field and the Quapaw High School diamond to stage a two-division (Large and Small) tourney that will be held today through Sunday.

Baxter Springs, Diamond, Neosho, Kansas (Okla.), Siloam Springs and Tahlequah Sequoyah are teams in the Triple Crown Division. Afton, Commerce, Chouteau, Quapaw, Salina (Okla.) and Wyandotte comprise the Small Division.

Today’s schedule on the Mickey Mantle Field is Commerce vs. Afton at 1 p.m., Sequoyah vs. Neosho at 3:15, Baxter Springs vs. Kansas at 5:30 and the Sequoyah-Neosho winner vs. the Baxter Springs-Kansas winner at 7:45.

Today’s game at Quapaw are Chouteau vs. Wyandotte at 1 p.m. and Quapaw vs. Salina at 3:15.

Southern’s Horn

fourth in decathlon

EMPORIA, Kan. — Phillip Horn, a Missouri Southern junior, holds fourth place in a decathlon meet at Emporia State.

Horn scored 3,448 points in the first five events Thursday. The meet winds up with five more events today.

“Our goal is to hit about 6,500 points and get on the national list (qualifying for the Division II championships),” said Tom Rutledge, Southern coach.

Horn has a solid performance, including a 6-foot-2 effot in the high jump and an 11.38-second clocking in the 100-meter dash.

Joplin man leads

U.S. Kenpo team

Ray Gilbert, Joplin, brought home more medals than any other of his five teammates last week in sparking the U.S. Kenpo squad to a third-place finish in international competition at Faro, Portugal.

Gilbert, the only martial-arts competitor from the Midwest on the U.S. squad, won six gold and two bronze medals.

This marks the second straight year of international competition for Gilbert, who collected two gold medals, as well as one silver, last year. The number of countries competing went from 18 in 2007 to 26 this year.

Southern softball

games rescheduled

Missouri Southern’s softball doubleheader today at Truman State has been postponed and rescheduled for April 21.

The Lions are scheduled to play in the Central Missouri Invitational on Saturday and Sunday in Warrensburg, Mo.

Lion tennis team

toppled at SBU

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Southwest Baptist defeated Missouri Southern 8-1 Wednesday in a dual tennis match.

The Lions (6-7, 1-3 MIAA) scored their point at No. 1 singles as Michelle Hall defeated Jolee Cook 6-3, 6-3.

The Lions have another league match at 4 p.m. today against Northwest Missouri at the Joplin High School courts.

PSU’s Abercrombie

to play all-star event

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Pittsburg State senior center Cory Abercrombie has been selected to play in the Collegiate Basketball Invitational on April 24-26 in Wadsworth, Ohio.

The event, promoted by McCarthy Sports, Inc., includes 65 players from NCAA Division II and III teams and NAIA teams placed on eight teams. Representatives from professional teams and agents will be on hand. After two days of games, a 20-player All-Star game will be played on April 26 and televised by ESPNU.

Emporia State guard DeAndre Townsend is the only other MIAA player selected to compete.
