CROSS COUNTRY

Lions open

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Missouri Southern opened its season in low-key fashion against high-powered competition.

The Lions ran against the University of Arkansas, with the men having Oklahoma as a second opponent.

Junior Kimi Shank had the top finish for the Lions in the women’s race, sixth overall. Senior Kara Eckard was the Lions’ second individual finisher, followed by juniors Ashley Bunch and Victoria Kline and sophomore Olga Bulgarova.

“We were hoping to pack our runners in a little tighter,” said Southern women’s coach Patty Vavra. “It was obviously our first race. We didn’t get moving until well into a mile in the race. That’s what first meets are for.”

Brennon Benkert was the lone veteran who ran for the Southern men, touring the 4.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 53 seconds to finish 13th overall.

Carthage freshman Derek Mendell was the Lions’ second runner, followed by Shawn Goebel.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t get a better effort,” said Southern men’s coach Tom Rutledge. “But it gives me something to build on.”

The Lions will run next week at Central Missouri. The Missouri Southern Stampede, scheduled for Sept. 20, will probably mark the debut of the Lions’ other veteran runners.

SOCCER

Pueblo clips Lions

Robert Kinsey’s two goals led Colorado State-Pueblo to a 3-1 soccer victory over Missouri Southern.

The match was moved from drenched Bodon Field to the turf at Hughes Stadium.

Kinsey scored midway through the first half, then put the Thunderwolves ahead 2-0 just 1:31 into the second half.

Southern drew within a goal when Greg Edmonds converted a Stuart Ziegler pass in the 73rd minute. Udobond Obotette scored on a penalty kick two minutes later for the final margin.

Southern keeper Jon Hansen and CSU-Pueblo’s Chris Smith each had six saves.

The Lions (0-4) entertain Colorado-Colorado Springs at 11 a.m. Sunday, also at Hughes Stadium.

OCC blanked

Central Methodist University shut out host Ozark Christian 7-0 in women’s soccer.

Central Methodist had 15 shots on goal, compared to one for OCC (0-2-1). Tanya Wood had eight saves for the Ambassadors, who will take on Westminster in Fulton on Wednesday.
