The difference is only eight students in the enrollments between Riverton and Baxter Springs high schools.

Nevertheless, Riverton has been moved up to Class 4A for winter and spring sports competition this school year.

Enrollment figures, based on the 10th, 11th and 12th grades as of Sept. 22, were announced Tuesday by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

Riverton, with an enrollment of 197, is the third smallest school in 4A, ahead of Scott City-Scott Community (196) and Wichita Independent (195).

Baxter Spring’s enrollment of 189 makes the Lions the seventh biggest school in 3A, behind Pleasant Ridge (194), Halstead (194), Larned (192), Marysville (192) Fredonia (191) and Silver Lake (190).

Pittsburg, at 550 students, remains one of the smallest 5A schools.

The state’s biggest school is Wichita East (1,559), and the smallest is St. Xavier of Junction City (16).

The classification breakdown has 32 schools in 6A and 5A, 64 schools in 4A through 2A and the remaining 101 schools in 1A.
