Carthage wins JHS tournament

The Carthage High School soccer team stopped the host Eagles 6-0 in the title match of the Joplin Invitational on Saturday.

Carthage, hiking its record to 17-2, led the Eagles (11-6) 3-0 at the half.

Saturday scores, leading up to the championship, were Carthage 10, College Heights Christian 0; Joplin 8, Webb City 0; Neosho 9, College Heights 1, and Carl Junction 6, Webb City 0.

The tourney started on Friday night with Joplin beating Carl Junction 3-0 and Carthage stopping Neosho 3-1.

Cole Beckham had two goals for Carthage against Joplin. Adding a goal apiece were Jose Lopez (assisted by Phillip DeVillers), Adrian Salas, Lorenzo Salas (Joe Curti) and Christian Solis. Matt Robinson assisted on the first Beckham tally.

CROSS COUNTRY

JHS fourth in league

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Joplin placed fourth in the Ozark Conference cross country meet at Lake Springfield.

Wet Plains edged Kickapoo 45-60 for the championship in the boys division, followed by Lebanon (80) and Joplin (121) in a field of nine complete teams.

Joplin did not enter a varsity girls team.

Senior Cody Thompson paced the Joplin runners with an 18th-place finish in 18:18.93 over the hilly five-kilometer course. Seniors Drew Warden and Taybor Parker were 20th and 26th, respectively. Junior Ryan Jacobs (29th) and freshman Ryan Davidson (31st) completed the top five for the Eagles.

“We had hoped for a top-three finish,” Joplin coach Jason Riddle said. “We did do a good job of packing our runners in.”

Joplin finished fifth in the junior varsity boys division, with Peter Kleindl the top runner.

The Eagles received a third-place finish from sophomore Vivien Moreno in the girls jayvee race. Senior Kayleigh Shuler and sophomore Amber Gower were eighth and 10th, respectively.

Clare Davis (third) amnd Lydia McAlister (sixth) medaled in the freshman girls race.
