MSSU, Griffons battle to 0-0 tie

Missouri Southern saw two scoring opportunities turned away in overtime, and the Lions settled for a 0-0 tie against Missouri Western in a women’s soccer match Thursday night at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

The Lions (4-9-1, 2-8-1 MIAA) owned an 18-7 advantage in shots over the Griffons (2-12-3, 1-10-1), including 8-1 in the two 10-minute overtime periods. Nikki Llewellyn had a shot from 15 yards out that wqas stopped by Griffons goalkeeper Jenna Weis in the first overtime. Then in the second extra session, Sarah Evers had a shot in the middle from 10 yards out that Weis thwarted with a diving save.

The Lions return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Truman State.

Tiger strikers

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Joplin, avenging a 6-0 loss, beat the Tigers 3-0 in a nonconference soccer match Thursday night.

Joplin, 16-6 overall, led 1-0 at the half on Blake Aggus’ penalty kick.

The Eagles received goals in the second half from Daniel McDonald and Chris Jones. Parker Maher and Eli Welch provided assists.

“Our team played hard for 80 minutes,” Joplin coach Ed Miller said. “We lost 6-0 to Carthage for third place in our tournament.

“We put together a lot of things,” Miller said. “We have to keep concentrating.”

Joplin statisics had it with a 20-11 advantage in shots and goalie John McDermid eight saves.

Carthage has been seeded first and Joplin second in the Class 3 District 12 Tournament scheduled Nov. 3-6 at Willard.

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. — The Eagles, finishing 2-7 in the Ozark Conference, swept Waynesville 25-16, 25-20.

Leaders for Joplin included Emilee Dailey (six kills), Emma Hays (six digs), Alli Worley (five assists) and Jessie McMullen (12 points, five digs).

Joplin will play host to the Class 4 District 12 Tournament starting on Tuesday in Kaminsky Gym. The Eagles challenge No. 1 seed Willard at 4 p.m.

AURORA, Mo. — Katelyn Joyner supplied 21 assists and 14 digs as the Carl Junction finished 4-3 in the Big 8 Conference with a 25-15, 25-23 volleyball victory Thursday night

Carl Junction, 14-10-6 overall, received nine kills from Mackenzie Valenti and three blocks from Holly Boles.

Carl Junction is seeded fourth in the Class 3 District 12 Tournament opening Monday night at McDonald County. The Bulldogs face Monett at 6 p.m.

Cardinals win final

NEVADA, Mo. — Webb City won two out of three sets en route to a nonconference volleyball victory against Nevada Thursday night.

The Cardinals won 25-19, 19-25, and 25-15. Webb City’s Cheyna Crouch had 19 assists, while Hailey Roderique had 7 digs. Kaitlin Jaeger had 15 kills and 4 blocks.

Webb City (19-13-1) plays on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.against Neosho in the Class 4 district tournament at Joplin. The Cardinals are seeded fourth.

Vision Group meet

The entry list for Saturday’s Vision Group scramble at Eagle Creek Country Club is at 93.

A noon luncheon precedes a 1 p.m. start time.

Jasper, Rich Hill

favored in district

LIBERAL, Mo. — Jasper and Rich Hill are seeded 1-2 for the Class 1 District 9 high school volleyball tournament scheduled Monday through Tuesday.

Opening matches on Monday are fourth-seeded Bronaugh vs. Northeast Vernon County at 5 p.m., No. 3 Liberal vs. Sheldon at 6:30 and Rich Hill vs. Hume at 8. Jasper has a bye.

Semifinals will be held at 5:30 p.m. and 7 on Tuesday with the championship match to follow at 8:30.
