Big fourth quarter powers Webb City win

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Webb City outscored Carl Junction 19-8 in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 56-46 victory Friday night in boys basketball action.

Junior Patrick Drake and senior Trey Laveroni scored 19 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the Cardinals (11-9).

Jake Stephenson led all scorers with 22 points for Carl Junction (6-14). Jansen Adams added 11 points for the Bulldogs, who outscored Webb City 18-11 in the third period to erase a 26-20 halftime deficit.

CHC girls 50, Liberal 44

LIBERAL, Mo. — College Heights Christian School, after coming within seconds of winning the game in overtime, outscored LIberal 8-2 in the second overtime stanza to win the Spring River Valley Conference girls game.

Kirsten Ward tallied 15 points to lead the Cougars (8-8, 1-1 SRVC). She scored six points in the overtime periods, including a 4-of-4 effort at the foul line.

Mallory Green and Rachel Brehm added 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Cougars, who led 21-14 at halftime.

Kristenk Peterson captured game honors with 18 points for Liberal (10-2, 2-2), and Hannah Beckwith contributed 13. The Bulldogs’ Kylie Brown hit a 3-point goal in the waning seconds of the first OT for a 42-42 deadlock.

McAuley Warrior Classic

Pierce City and Wheaton were the girls’ winners while the New Covenant boys were victorious in the McAuley Catholic Warrior Classic

Pierce City defeated Joplin’s junior varsity 63-44, Wheaton defeated East Newton B 27-22 and New Covenant toppled Exeter 51-35.

Today’s final session pairs East Newton B girls playing Joplin B for seventh place at noon, Exeter boys playing Joplin B at 1:30 p.m., McAuley playing Springfield New Covenant at 3 for the boys championship, Wheaton girls playing Pierce City for fifth at 4:30, Verona girls vs. East Newton for third at 6 and Seneca playing McAuley for the girls championship at 7:30.

No player scored in double figures in the Wheaton-East Newton B contest. Wheaton led 13-8 at halftime.

Nick Petree collected 25 points to lead New Covenant and all scorers. Exeter, topped by Ryan Odenbrett’s 10 points, trailed 24-19 at halftime.

Pierce City jumped out to a 43-24 advantage at intermission. Stevie Freeman netted 22 points to lead Pierce City and all scorers.

MacKenzie Roberts and Ashlea Norman had 10 points apiece for Joplin B.

Thomas Jefferson boys 33,

Verona 29

VERONA, Mo. — The Cavaliers upended Verona in an Ozark 7 contest.

Jordan Stauffer collected 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead Thomas Jefferson, which evened its conference record at 3-3 and went to 9-6 overall.

Wesley Kissinger and Charlie Withnell netted 11 points apiece to top Verona (7-11, 2-5), which trailed 13-9 at halftime.

Purdy girls 66,

Thomas Jefferson 27

Purdy roared out to a 49-11 halftime, including 35 points in the first quarter, in routing the Thomas Jefferson girls 66-27.

The Cavaliers fell to 1-15 overall and 0-6 in the Ozark 7 Conference.

Addy Roller collected 17 points and Shelby White added 16 to pace Purdy.

Sally Currence topped Thomas Jefferson with nine points.

Liberal boys 57,

College Heights 27

LIBERAL, Mo. — Liberal pulled away in the middle quarters to whip visiting College Heights Christian in a Spring River Valley Conference game.

The game was deadlocked at 10 after one quarter. The Bulldogs, 9-10 overall, expanded a 26-14 halftime lead to 49-20 after three quarters.

Zac Short had 13 points to lead the Bulldogs, Cole Williams and Jordan Meadows added 11 and 10, respectively.

Evan Belk had eight points for the Cougars.

Liberal resumes play Tueday at home against Jasper. College Heights entertains Greenfield the same night.
