Renee Lisle and Lori Fleming captured the singles championships in the Joplin USBC Women’s Championship Tournament concluded last weekend at Bowl East.
Renee topped the Class A singles standings with a 712 total. Linda Randall of Galena, Kan., was second with 672, a pin in front of Angie Ryals of Joplin. Candy Brown, also of Joplin, placed fourth with 649 and Linda Bailey, Joplin, was fifth with 644.
Lori, with a 669 total, won the Class B title. Shannon Long, of Galena, was second with 624. Sonnie Dooley, Joplin, placed third with 607, Heather Bryan, Joplin, was fourth with 560 and Donna Musser and Tammy Bryan, both of Joplin, tied for fifth with 554.
Lisle, Joplin, and Fleming, Carthage, also captured handicap all-events titles in their divisions. Lisle totaled 1,982 and Fleming finished with 1,861.
Trailing Lisle in Class A were Janet Buening, Joplin, 1,902; Nancy Bell, Joplin, 1,895; Beverly Zerkel, Webb City, 1,830, and Margaret Kaughman, Joplin, 1,817.
Following Fleming in the Class B all-events were Karen Peschka, Joplin, 1,793; Sonnie Dooley, 1,790; Darla Wood, Joplin, 1,672, and Emily Helme, Joplin, 1,666.
Carol Dutton, Joplin, and Lisle finished 1-2 in scratch all-events. Dutton totaled 1,979 for her team, singles and doubles events and Lisle had 1,955. Sonya Fort, Joplin, was third, 1,715; Marsha Jennings, Galena, placed fourth, 1,575, and Janie Walkenshaw, Galena, was fifth, 1,567.
Dutton and Fort captured the A Division doubles with 1,384. Nancy Bell and Janet Buening, Joplin, were second with 1,287 and were followed by Linda Randall and Sheryl Snell, both of Galena, 1,266; Bernice Cooke-Beverly Zerkel, Webb City, 1,240, and Sharon Chambell-Janie Parker, Joplin, 1,227.
Peschka and Wood topped the Class B doubles standings with 1,255. Heather Bryan and Tammy Bryan finished second with 1,201 and Musser and Dooley placed third with 1,098.
Three Joplin teams led the Class A standings, with M & M’s taking the title with 2,993. Funpei was second with 2,896 and Remarkables placed third with 2,894. Completing the top five were Carl Richard Fourth Street Bowl, Carl Junction, 2,892, and Cardinal Ladies, Webb City, 2,812.
Crown Lanes captured the Class B team title with 2,847. The Bowl East team from Carthage finished second with 2,793 and Wolfe Pack, Carl Junction, was third with 2,774. High Hopes, Joplin, was fourth with 2,426.
Checks will be mailed to the tournament winners and trophies will be presented during the annual city association banquet in May.
The GJUSBC men’s open tournament will be contested at Crown Lanes for three weekends, starting next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14-15. The tournament will conclude on March 1 and entries will be accepted up to and including that date.
Jim Noland rolls 803
Jim Noland was zeroed in at Bowl East last Tuesday, putting together games of 267, 277 and 259 for a whopping 803 series. It was Jim’s first 800, according to the 2007-2008 Joplin USBC yearbook.
Jim’s big series topped a lengthy list of top performances at Bowl East. Curtis Vaughan posted games of 259, 269 and 243 in rolling a 771 series.
Kevin Burgess rode games of 288 and 279 to a 770 total and Mark Howerton shot 279-753. Phil Bolinger had a pair of 268 games en route to a 740 set and David Brisco had games of 266 and 269 in posting a 751 set.
Other big series included Tom Stith 742, Greg Lankford and Joe Sanders 728s, David Dalton 721, B.J. Strickling 277-714 and Chris Slates and Les Sadler, 704. Bill Busby logged the high line of 289 and Dale Martin had a 270.
Candy Brown continued her hot shooting at Bowl East with games of 256, 225 and 234 for a 715 series. Candy also posted a 609 set during the past week.
Tammy Phillips totaled 610 with a high line of 235, Andrea Manning shot 608 and Linda Bailey rolled 607. Cindy Anderson logged the high line of 244.
Over at Crown Lanes, Brenton Cox set the scoring pace with a 276-699. Dave Lightle shot 685 and Robbie Goheen 673. Janie Walkenshaw paced the women at Crown with 231-614.
Kenny Snow, with a 266 high line, topped the men’s series charts at the Fourth Street Bowl with 748. Gabe Attoun was close behind with a 259-734. Don Ruddick had a 719, Jamie Kohler 287-705 and Bill Townsend logged a 275 game.
Renee Lisle led the women at Fourth Street with 257-672. Sonya Fort had 624 and 647 with a high game of 247. Carol Dutton rolled games of 254 and 258 during the week and posted a high series of 625. Janie Walkenshaw rode a 233 game to a 605 set.
Gene Smith (232) had the high line and Bill McEntire (531) the top series in the senior men’s competition at Fourth Street. Billie Camp paced the senior women with 213-556. Bernice Cooke had 520 and Jackie Peterson rolled 202-504.
There were no less than five 600-plus series rolled in the Monday Seniors League at Bowl East. Brothers Byron and Myron Sisk shot 625 and 624, respectively. Steve Wiles also had 625 while Tom Kinkade finished with a 622 and Tom Fortson posted a 615 set. Buryl Clingan had the high line of 247, two pins better than Wiles and Byron Sisk.
Katrina Smith (483 series) and Dixie Ferris (186 game) paced the senior women at Bowl East.
The youth bowlers were on target, too, at Bowl East last week. Kenny Phillips totaled 667 on games of 217, 225 and 225 and Tyler Meyer had 660 on games of 210, 203 and 247. Teri Lankford led the girls with 232-602.
