Gorillas nip Blues in 3 OTs

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Brianna Buchanan capped a career night with nine points in the third overtime as Pittsburg State’s women surprised Washburn 94-87 in an MIAA basketball battle Saturday night at John Lance Arena.

Washburn fought off a second-half rally to beat the Pittsburg State men 80-69.

Buchanan scored a career-high 31 points as Pittsburg State upset the No. 9-ranked team in the WBCA/Division II national poll.

Buchanan hit 10 of 15 shots from the field, including five of six from 3-point range. She also hit all six free throws and finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.

Candice Gilbert added 19 points for the Gorillas. Taylor DePrice had 16 points, Nicole McCombs 11 and Bailey Waugh 10.

Stanecia Graham came off the bench to score 29 points for Washburn.

, hitting 13 of 21 shots from the floor.

MIAA scoring leader Janice Bright had 21 points, but hit just seven of 26 shots. Brette Ulsaker added 16 points for the Blues.

Bright and Graham had game-tying shots in the first two overtimes.

Gilbert’s layup and a Gilbert trey put Pittsburg State ahead to stay in the final extra session.

Washburn, 22-4 overall, dropped to 15-4 in the MIAA.

Pittsburg State is now 18-7 and 13-5.
