Jones, Keyser second in Kansas state track

WICHITA, Kan. — Baxter Springs thrower Daniel Jones and Galena jumper Chase Keyser matched the winning marks but had to settle for second places on Saturday in the Class 3A boys state track meet.

Baxter Springs scored 20 points and placed 11th in the 3A boys team standings for the highest finish by an area team in the KSHSAA Track and Field Championships at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium.

Jones took second in the javelin with a throw of 184 feet, 6 inches. Andrew Wahlmeier of Rock Creek also reached that distance and won the event based on a better second throw.

The Lions’ Stephen Harper placed fifth in the 200 meters (22.79 seconds) and sixth in the 400 (5.99), and Jake Spence took sixth in the 1600 (4:39.18).

Keyser and Taylor Buck of Medicine Lodge both cleared 6-8 in the high jump, and Buck was the event winner.

Class 5A

Pittsburg earned its second invididual state championship of the weekend when Keenan Soles won the triple jump at 45-8.25 inches.

The Purple Dragon boys also picked up points in two relays as the 4x100 was fifth and the 4x400 took seventh.

The Dragons’ Amber Kloster, who set a state record while winning the javelin on Friday, added a third-place finish in the shot put on Saturday. The Dragons’ 4x800 relay team was seventh.

Pittsburg finished No. 14 in the boys team standings with 22 points and No. 15 in the girls standings with 17.

Class 4A

Hurdler Matthew Weil of Labette County finished fifth in the 110 highs (16.07) and just missed another medal when he was eighth in the 330 intermediates (42.26).

Ethan Fulton of Iola won the 110 highs in 14.86.

Tessa Westhoff of Girard was seventh in the girls discus at 121-6.
