Father-son Wells duo set to hit Monett Speedway tonight

Justin Wells and son Cole haven’t finished 1-2 in an A feature stock car race.

That was true anyway entering Saturday night’s late model show at Caney Valley (Kan.) Speedway.

“We’ve had some close heat races but it hasn’t happened in a main event,” Justin Wells said earlier Saturday.

The Wells duo, from Aurora, was relaxing in a Bartlesville motel before heading to the Caney Valley track.

Justin was second and Cole seventh in the A feature on Friday night at the 3/10-mile Mid America Speedway in South Coffeyville.

They’re scheduled to hit Monett Speedway — their home track — for tonight’s Race Brothers DLRA late model special. The winner of the late model main event will receive $1,200.

Support classes on the 7:30 p.m. program at the 3/8-mile clay track are modified, B modified and pure stock.

Maybe the Wells’ 1-2 finish will happen tonight. Justin is No. 1 in late model track points with 498 and Cole is tied for fourth with 379.

Shane Essary, also of Aurora, and Ken Essary, Cape Fair, are 2-3 in points with 487 and 397, respectively.

Said Justin Wells: “I played catch-up at Monett (in points) after breaking on the opening night.”

Wells beat Shane Essary and Ken Essary last Sunday night in the Monett main event.

Cole, 16, will be a junior at Crane High School. He’s seeking his first late model A feature win.

“He’s done well,” Justin Wells said of his son. “Overall, I believe he probably has deserved better results considering the way he’s been driving. He’s been hampered by the little things.”

Cole Wells placed third in the sport mod class at Monett in 2011.

Track points leaders in tonight’s support classes are Jackie Dalton (modified), J.C. Morton (B modified) and Rick McNally (factory stock).

Joining Justin Wells in capturing main events at Monett last week were Shawn Strong (B modified), Stephen Muilenburg (modified), Clayton Powell (pure stock), John Coats (factory stock), Don Lacey (pro-4) and Randy Lebow (Midwest Modz).

Coats, Joplin, leads Garrett Essary 714-672 in the factory stock division.

Gates open tonight at 5. Admission prices are $15 and $5. A pit pass is $30.
