Carthage rolls to O'Dell title

CARTHAGE, Mo. —  Nevada High School baseball coach Danny Penn admitted his team was hoping for a bit of payback on Saturday.

“It didn’t work out to say the least,” Penn said.

Carthage won its annual Bill O’Dell Tournament by beating Nevada 12-1 in five innings at Carl Lewton Stadium in Carthage Municipal Park,

Nevada, Penn explained, had lost 5-4 in eight innings recently at Carthage.

This time, though, Carthage scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings and received three-hit pitching from Jordan Musser in climbing to 9-0.

Said Carthage coach Mike Godfrey: “We put it all together today.”

Mount Vernon finished with 17 hits in beating Seneca 19-7 in six innings for third place.

Monett rallied to nudge Webb City 5-4 in nine innings for seventh place and the fifth-place contest between Carl Junction, which had won the previous two O’Dells, and Lamar was canceled.

Carthage 12, Nevada 1

Musser, a senior right-hander, was in control of the game as much as the Carthage bats.

Said Godfrey of Musser: “His fastball was very effective down in the zone. He had life on it. He kept the ball down. He mixed his pitches and had a good change early in the game.”

Said Penn: “It’s hard to be successful when you can’t throw strikes. We were pitching behind in the count throughout. They (Carthage) swung the bats very well when we did find the strike zone.”

Added Godfrey: “We had more good at-bats in this game than we had in any previous all season.”

Musser, who also stroked two singles, struck out four and walked one.

Main support for Musser came from Gabe Franklin (two hits, three RBI), Dalton Stafford (two hits, three RBI) and Johnny Mills (two hits, two RBI). Seth Beckner had three of aggressive Carthage’s nine stolen bases.

Nevada, which had eight juniors in its starting lineup, lost for the second time in six games.

Mount Vernon 19, Seneca 7

The Mountaineers scored eight runs in he top of the sixth inning to highlight their sixth win in eight games.

Mount Vernon received three hits and four RBI from Logan Rycraft, 3-for-3 and two RBI from Kyler Shoff, three hits from Zane Phillips and two safeties apiece from Grayson Ketron and Dominic Swillum.

Seneca (6-3) was paced offensively by Colton Webber (three hits) and Payton Rawlins (two hits). Kyler Ng and Rawlins each had two RBI.

Mark Moriondo, a senior right-hander, was the winning pitcher for Mount Vernon.

Monett 5, Webb City 4

The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the ninth inning with a tally only to have the Cubs strike for a pair in the bottom half.

Seth Watkins’ triple and Cade Crouch’s single boosted the Cardinals ahead.

But Jordan Hall walked and Zack Hammond doubled for the Cubs to tie the game. An error on Nick Childress’ grounder to the right side left runners at the corners and Cooper Caldwell delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly.

Blake Spain, a sophomore right-hander, struck out 10 in working the distance for the Cubs.

Nicky Roberts had two hits for the Cubs. Garnering two apiece for Webb City were Crouch, Watkins, Joseph Jones and Jay Roderique.
