Local golfers tee off at state today

Jacob Fair of Monett and Eric Wilmoth of Mount Vernon, medalists in each of the last two years, have earned return trips to the MSHSAA boys golf state tournaments.

Four classes of competition begin their two-day tournaments today at courses in the Springfield area — Class 4 at Silo Ridge Golf Course in Bolivar, Class 3 at Rivercut Golf Club in Springfield, Class 2 at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield and Class 1 at Fremont Hills Country Club in Nixa.

A total of 20 area golfers — Mount Vernon’s team and 15 individual entries — survived district and sectional tournaments to qualify for state.

Fair, who tied for fifth place in the Class 3 tournament two years ago, came within one shot of a state title last year but he missed a seven-foot eagle putt on the final hole and wound up in a five-way tie for second place.

Carl Junction’s Ethan Hutcheson, runner-up behind Fair in the sectional, just missed a state medal last year, finishing in a tie for 22nd place. Hutcheson and Fair are paired together today, starting at 8:45 a.m.

Ben Starkey of Webb City, Evan White of Cassville and Joseph Ferry of Nevada are other Class 3 state veterans.

Mount Vernon returns three players — Wilmoth, Korey Pryer and David Rhoden — from last year’s team that finished fourth in Class 2, only two shots out of second place. Wilmoth tied for sixth place at 159 last year after finishing in a tie for ninth two years ago.

Jonathan Shumaker of Thomas Jefferson and Phillip Roller are returnees in the Class 1 meet. They are paired together today at 8:54, and Connor Schlegel of McAuley Catholic tees off 45 minutes later.

Carthage’s Garrett Roberts is the lone area entry in Class 4.
