PREP ROUNDUP: Joplin soccer grabs 18th win

OZARK, Mo. — Joplin scored four goals in the first half and defeated Ozark 7-2 in a nonconference soccer game Thursday.

However, Eagles coach Ed Miller said they could have scored more. Joplin had 21 shots on goal, but Ozark goalie Hunter Earnest recorded 11 saves.

“We got out early in the first half,” Miller said. “We had lots of opportunities, but their goalie made some incredible saves. We scored seven. We’re happy with that, but their goalie came up big.”

Joplin’s Domi Salcede scored two of the team’s first-half goals. Ozark responded with two goals to open the second half from Rodney Geremia and Jacob Neidig.

The Eagles followed with goals from Jonathon Ponce, Will Krolman and Joe Rice at the 65, 67 and 68-minute marks.

Joplin (18-1-1) failed to earn its 15th shutout of the season, but goalkeeper Brock Renken did log seven saves.

Carl Junction blanks Cassville

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Carl Junction’s defense and goalkeeper Josiah Dinwiddie shut out Cassville 1-0 in a Big 8 Conference match.

Carl Junction’s Tyler Morley scored the winning goal 30 minutes into the match with an assist by Arturo Nunez. The Bulldogs outshot Cassville, 12-5.

Joplin beats Parkview

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Eagles improved to 22-10-2 overall and 5-2 in the Ozark Conference with the 25-21, 25-11 victory.

“We had a balanced attack,” Joplin coach Staci Saunders said. “We had a strong team effort in that second set.”

Eagle leaders include Olivia Hampton (10 service points, four kills, two blocks), Anna Banwart (nine points, four kills, three digs), Jacqueline Lieurance (five kills), Leah Rader (four kills) and Erin Lawellin (14 assists).

Bulldogs stay perfect in Big 8

MONETT, Mo. — Carl Junction improved to 5-0 in the Big 8 Conference by defeating Monett, 25-13, 25-7.

Maria Chism led Carl Junction with eight kills and Bradyn Wall had 14 assists.

Thomas Jefferson rallies

The young Cavaliers lost 26-24 to visiting Springfield New Covenant before pulling out the win 25-19, 28-26.

Said Cavalier coach Jennifer Jameson: “We really battled in that third set. Hannah Mathews was a spark overall in the match with her serving.”

Mathews and Sam Mountjoy are the only seniors on the 7-6 team, Jameson said.
