Major Missouri American Legion baseball tournaments will be held at two sites in the area this week.
The seven-team Triple A (varsity) District 15 Tournament opens today at Anderson with McDonald County Post 392 the host.
Carl Junction Post 781 will host the five-team Double A Zone 3 Tournament starting Thursday.
Teams with first-round byes are the Joplin Miners (varsity) and Lamar Post 209 Southwest Tigers.
The schedule today at Anderson is the fourth-seeded Carthage Merchants vs. McDonald County at 1 p.m., second-seeded Webb City 322 vs. Carl Junction Post 781 at 3:30 and No. 3 Monett Post 91 vs. Cassville Post 118 at 6.
Joplin debuts at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the double-elimination tourney against the Carthage-McDonald County winner.
The 3:30 p.m. game on Wednesday is the Webb City-Carl Junction winner vs. the Monett-Cassville winner. The first losers’ bracket contest at 6 p.m. is the loser of Webb City-Carl Junction vs. the loser of Monett-Cassville.
Games on Thursday are scheduled for 1 p.m., 3:30 and 6. The 6 p.m. contest is the winners’ bracket final.
Two more losers’ bracket games are scheduled at 3:30 p.m. and 6 on Friday. Saturday’s championship round starts at 3:30 p.m. with another game, if necessary, slated for 6;30.
Games are scheduled for nine innings but the 10-run rule will be observed after 6 1/2 or seven innings. Post 392 coach Nick Martin is tournament director. Charlie Long, Carl Junction, is District 15 baseball chairman.
Opening Zone 3 AA games on Thursday at Carl Junction are Post 781 vs. West Plains (District 16 champion) at noon, Warrensburg (District 6) vs. Springfield Glendale (District 17) at 2:30 p.m., Lamar Southwest Tigers (District 15) vs. the West Plains-Carl Junction winner at 5 and the West Plains-Post 781 loser vs. Warrensburg-Glendale loser at 7:30.
Friday’s games are set for 2 p.m. (the winners’ bracket final), 4:30 and 7.
The championship round begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Another contest, if needed, will follow. The winner advances to Joplin the following week for state competition at Joe Becker Stadium.
The Joplin varsity is 30-6 overall after finishing its regular season on Saturday with a 6-4 win in nine innings at Baxter Springs.
Joplin coach Drew Schulte used four pitchers in tuning up. He said Tyler Fancher, the starter, was credited with the pitching win and had help from Colton Johnson, Blake Brown and Brett Graham.
Schulte said left fielder Rex Whisner and Brown, who started at second base, had two hits apiece for the Miners.
Schulte said he wasn’t sure of the Joplin starting pitcher on Wednesday.
The Miners were 10-2 in District 15 games during the regular season, Completing the standings were Webb City and Monett 8-4, Carthage 5-7, McDonald County and Cassville 4-8 and Carl Junction 3-9.
The Lamar Southwest Tigers are 28-3 overall and were 14-0 during the District 15 regular season. They came from the losers’ bracket to win the District 15 Tournament at Monett.
The Southwest Tigers have a 14-player roster, all ages 14-16, with 12 players from Lamar and two from Liberal. They’ve lost only to Joplin, Webb City and Branson.
Southwest coach Jay Stahl, a 1960 Lamar High School graduate, has served Lamar youth for more than 50 years in baseball. He’s assisted by Doug Robertson, Tom Mooney and Bert Phipps.
