A coach, a multi-sport athlete and two teams comprise the 2013 induction class for the Joplin Area Sports Hall of Fame.
Missouri Southern coach Tom Rutledge, Joplin High School athlete Terry Wilson, Missouri Southern’s national championship softball team and the TAMKO Roofers basketball are the inductees, announced Friday.
Induction ceremonies will be held on Friday, May 17, at 7 p.m. at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. Tickets are available for $15 apiece and must be purchased by May 13. Tickets can be purchased by calling Nicole Doughty at the Joplin Sports Authority, 417-625-1006, or email email@example.com.
Rutledge, also a 2013 Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inductee, is completing his 24th year as track and cross country coach at Missouri Southern. He will retire after this year’s national championship meet.
Wilson is a 1953 Joplin High School graduate who was a standout in football, basketball, baseball and track and field. He played football one year at the University of Missouri before signing a baseball contract with the Philadelphia Phillies and playing in the Phillies’ minor league organization.
Missouri Southern won the 1992 NCAA Division II softball championship with a 1-0 victory over Cal-State Hayward in Shawnee, Kan. The Lions, coached by Pat Lipira, went 50-7 that season.
The TAMKO Roofers were a semipro basketball team made up of players from southwest Missouri and employees of TAMKO Roofing Products. The Roofers were one of three teams from the 1950s to defeat the Harlem Globetrotters.
