Gorillas eliminated from MIAA softball tourney

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A disastrous first inning proved to be just enough to end Pittsburg State’s season on Saturday.

The Gorillas gave up four first-inning runs and then saw their comeback attempt fall just short in a 4-3 loss to Truman State in the losers’ bracket of the MIAA Tournament at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex.

Kristin Grossman hit a two-run single to put the Bulldogs of 2-0 in the first before Liz Leath’s RBI single made it 3-0. Ally McReynolds later drew a bases-loaded walk that made it 4-0 with still no outs recorded.

Kyndel Shelburn, who had entered in relief, then recorded a strikeout and a pair of pop fouls to stop the bleeding.

Tiffany Brown nearly single-handedly brought the Gorillas back. She singled down the left field line to bring home Kreslee Ketcham to make it 4-1 in the top of the fourth before blasting a two-run homer — also with Ketcham aboard — with two out in the seventh.

But Truman State pitcher Hannah Washburn (17-7) then forced a foul out to end the game.

Shelburn was dominant in relief, throwing six scoreless innings while striking out seven, but her bases-loaded walk in the first pushed across what eventually became the winning run — a run that was pinned on starter Samantha Grove.

Pitt State wraps up its season at 28-22.
