Joplin bow tie to be worn on Baseball Night in America

— There’s a Joplin tie — more specifically, a bow tie, on Baseball Night in America tonight on FOX.

Ken Rosenthal, a broadcaster and FOXSports.com senior Major League Baseball writer, will wear a Joplin bow tie during tonight’s broadcast of the Texas Rangers-St. Louis Cardinals game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The game starts at 6:15 and will be shown locally on KFJX.

Rosenthal also will talk about progress made in Joplin since an EF-5 tornado hit the city on May 22, 2011.

The bow ties were the result of collaboration between the Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin and BowTie Cause, a national not-for-profit organization. BowTie Cause was founded by former NFL linebacker Dhani Jones as a way to raise awareness for charitable organizations. So far BowTie Cause has created ties for more than 80 non-profits nationwide.

The Joplin bow tie is the first tie designed for a community and the first to be designed through a community-wide art project.

Margie Moss created the winning design in the contest that attracted 200 entries. Her design includes construction tools, scissors, buildings, plants, crosses and the words love, hope and Joplin.

Proceeds from the bow tie sales are split between Spiva Center for the Arts and Rebuild Joplin.

The Joplin bow tie costs $57 and can be purchased by contacting Spiva Center for the Arts, 417-623-0183 or email spiva@spivaarts.org, or Rebuild Joplin, 417-623-0065 or email development@rebuildjoplin.org.
