PSU women earn spot in NCAA tournament

A three-day worry for Pittsburg State’s women’s basketball team ended shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday.

That’s when the Gorillas (23-7) learned they are in the NCAA Tournament as the No. 5 seed in the Central Region. They will play Wayne State, Neb. (27-4) in a first-round game on Friday in Searcy, Ark.

MIAA Postseason Tournament champion Emporia State is the region’s top seed, but the Lady Hornets can’t be the region host because their homecourt, White Auditorium, is already booked next weekend as the site of the Class 1A state high school basketball tournament.

So the region site was moved to Searcy, Ark., the home of Harding. The Bison dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in the region with Sunday’s loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State in the Great American Conference final.

Other first-round pairings are Emporia State vs. Southwestern Oklahoma, Harding  vs. Concordia-St. Paul and No. 3 Central Missouri vs. Northern State.

Semifinal games will be played on Saturday, and the championship game is set for Monday, March 10.
