Bulldogs smother McDonald County

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — The Carl Junction Bulldogs used five touchdowns from Aaron Moore, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries en route to a 44-20 victory on senior night over the McDonald County Mustangs.

“I thought that our offense played well,” coach Jesse Wall said. “Except for some penalties in the second half, our offensive line played real well, controlled the ball a lot of the time, moved the ball effectively, did what we wanted to do.”

On a second down-and-5 play on the game’s opening drive, Moore scored on an 18-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs marched into Bulldog territory on their ensuing drive but fell a yard short of a first down on a fourth-and-3 play at the 21.

Moore ripped off a 52-yard touchdown run for his second score with seven minutes left in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs converted the 2-point conversion for a 15-0 lead.

Then after an interception, Keegan Pittman hit Moore with an eight-yard touchdown pass with 55 seconds left to give Carl Junction a 23-0 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs recovered a fumble at the McDonald County 21 on the Mustangs’ first drive of the second half, and on the next play, Moore scored for the fourth time to give the Bulldogs a 30-0 lead.

McDonald County got on the scoreboard on Jantsen Lynn’s nine-yard run, and Cody Hobbs passed to Chance Buttram for the 2-point conversion.

The Mustangs threatened again on their next drive, but it ended on Chase Marrs’ interception at the 2-yard line.

“Defensively we played great as well,” Wall said. “We’ve been talking to our kids all season about how we’ve played a half but not ever played a full game yet, and we felt like we played a full game tonight.”

Moore scored his final touchdown when he took the ball 98 yards to give Carl Junction a 37-8 advantage in the early stages of the fourth quarter.

“He had a pretty good day,” Wall said. “I’ll tell you what, Aaron is a great kid. He works extremely hard. Another young man, Nick Thompson, got hurt last week and we made a decision to not let him play tonight. Aaron ran the ball extremely well tonight, played extremely hard and he’s a very good football player. The one thing about Aaron is, it doesn’t matter whether he’s got a ball in his hand or not, he’s going to hit you.”

The Mustangs answered as Hobbs found Buttram with a 51-yard touchdown pass.

With 7:27 to play, Chris Whelan scored the Bulldogs’ final touchdown on a 10-yard run. Lynn scored for the Mustangs as time expired.

“We’ve talked to our kids, we feel like our record should be better than what it is,” Wall said. “We should have won some games that we didn’t win. And we feel like we’re trying to compete to get into the playoffs. We’ve got two games left and we’re going come out and practice and work and get ready to play next week, and try to win the next two games and go to the playoffs. That’s what our goal is.”
