Dutton's hat trick sparks Eagles

Brittany Dutton recorded three goals and an assist as the Joplin Eagles soccer team defeated Hillcrest 6-2 on Thursday at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

“We passed the ball well and did a good job of communicating,” said Dutton, a freshman.

Joplin (9-3, 3-1 Ozark Conference) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after goals from Chelsea Nimmo and Anna Banwart in the first half and two from Dutton in the second half.

However, Hillcrest (5-10) quickly responded with back-to-back goals from Kaelyn Cleeton and Kelsie Cleeton to make it 4-2.

“We needed to get our heads about us there,” Joplin coach Ed Miller said. “We lost our composure a little. Then we came back and scored another goal, and we seemed like we redeemed ourselves and got back to where we wanted to be.”

Dutton scored her third goal in the 69th minute to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead. A few minutes later, Kate Beckham knocked in a goal.

Joplin entered Thursday’s game coming off a big 2-1 win against Kickapoo.

“After a win like that, we had a little bit of a letdown as far as our concentration goes,” Miller said. “But I’m happy with our 6-2 win. It just seems like we weren’t able to put together a full 80 minutes. We’ll be 10 on, then we’ll slack off and then we have to regain it again. So we’re looking for more consistency. We want to play 80 minutes of consistent soccer.”

It was a strong offensive day for the Eagles with a hat trick from Dutton and a goal and two assists from Banwart. Six different Eagles were involved in scoring plays.

However, Miller said there were more chances.

“We had a lot of opportunities in the box,” Miller said. “We’re happy with six, but there were a lot of other opportunities right there in front of the net that we could have capitalized on.”

Joplin will compete in the Neosho tournament today and Saturday. The Eagles face Neosho at 2 p.m. today and Springdale at 6. They will play Lebanon at 9 a.m. Saturday.
