COLUMBIA, Mo. — Hogan Prep Academy’s explosive 28-6 run in the first 10 minutes of the game subdued Mount Vernon in the Class 3 semifinals Saturday at Mizzou Arena.
Hogan advanced to Saturday’s championship game with a 66-51 victory against the Mountaineers, who will face Whitfield in the third-place game at 1:40 p.m. today. Hogan will play Cardinal Ritter for the championship at 1:40 p.m. Saturday.
Cardinal Ritter outgunned Whitfield 90-79 in Thursday’s other semifinal game.
Hogan broke away to a 10-2 lead on a 3-point goal by Dawan Cummings, a 6-foot-3 senior guard who had 25 points. Cummings’ behind-the-back layup with one minute left in the first quarter gave the Rams a 15-4 lead.
Then, leading 16-6, the Rams went on a 12-0 run that featured three spinning layups by Dominique Washington, a 6-6 junior, including one on an assist by Cummings.
“We wanted to pick up the pace,” Hogan head coach Steve Stilzer said. “We had seen them on film. We didn’t think they could keep up with our pace.
“We didn’t think they had played an athletic team prior to us, in districts or whatever. The bench is the difference. The kids are long and athletic.”
While Mount Vernon’s fans outnumbered Hogan’s by a ratio of more than 100-to-1, it was the Rams who played as though Mizzou Arena was their home floor.
“For this to be the first Hogan team to play for a state title means a lot to us,” Washington said.
Senior co-captain Zack Kleine led Mount Vernon with 21 points and nine rebounds.
“In the first quarter, we came out scared,” Kleine said. “After that, we played pretty good basketball.”
Jackson Tettenhorst, the Mountaineers’ other co-captain, was limited to eight points, in part because he picked up his second foul midway through the first quarter and went to the bench.
“To be successful, we have to be strong with the ball,” Tettenhorst said. “And we weren’t strong enough.”
The Rams outrebounded Mount Vernon 36-27 and made 50 percent of their field-goal attempts. Hogan guard Maurice Moss had a game-high six steals and five assists.
“They’re just too quick to the ball,” Mount Vernon head coach Skip Brock said. “We hadn’t seen that type of pressure in a long time. It’s hard to simulate that in practice.
“It seemed like every time they got an offensive rebound, they got a 3 out of it,” Brock said. “I just want to make sure they get the credit they deserve. They’re an outstanding team.”
Despite Hogan’s scoring spree, Mount Vernon’s fans stayed in the game and applauded when a call that had gone against their team midway through the fourth quarter was reversed by the officials. But a break-away dunk by Cummings with just less than five minutes to go gave Hogan a 60-40 lead and quieted the crowd.
“The defense caused most of our offense,” Cummings said. “When our defense plays well, that helps our offense, too.”
Hogan, 23-6, had been defeated this season by larger schools such as Nixa, Glendale, Archbishop O’Hara and Leavenworth (Kan.)
Freshman Shane Williams scored 10 points for Mount Vernon, 24-8, which had won 10 of its last 11 games going into the semifinals.
