MSSU adds juco quarterback

The Missouri Southern Lions added another quarterback to its roster with the transfer of Eastern Arizona College’s Detavis Buggs.

Buggs (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) was part of an Eastern Arizona team that finished 4-6 last season.

Before his time at Eastern Arizona, Buggs was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and track and field at Harris County High School in Georgia.

As a senior, Buggs was a Dandy Dozen selection and earned all-conference and all-city honors. He also was the team’s offensive player of the year as a junior and earned all-conference and all-city accolades.

Buggs will join a large stable of quarterbacks as the Lions look to replace last year’s starter Kellen Cox.

Sophomore Jay McDowell (6-2, 190), redshirt freshman Ricky Nichols (6-2, 185) and redshirt freshman Tyler Cain all competed at quarterback for Missouri Southern during spring drills.

In addition to Buggs, Independence Community College transfer Tyquan Hayes (6-1, 210), Upson-Lee (Ga.) High School’s Corey Moss (6-2, 190) and Joplin High School’s Gabe Sachetta (6-0, 185) will join the Lions in the fall.

Missouri Southern, which finished 6-5 last year, will open the season Sept. 5 at home against Central Oklahoma.
