CARTHAGE, Mo. —
The Joplin Miners, relying on three-hit pitching from Keith Simpson and a bases-loaded triple from Hank Millard, defeated Carthage 9-1 in five innings for third place in the American Legion baseball Roper Classic on Saturday.
The Miners earlier hurdled McDonald County 10-2 in five innings in a cross-pool contest behind Millard’s four-hitter at Carl Lewton Stadium in Carthage Municipal Park.
The two wins left Bobby Stackhouse’s Miners 15-9 overall entering Tuesday’s 5:30 p.m. doubleheader against Pryor (Okla.) at Joe Becker Stadium.
Said Stackhouse: “We wound up having a good tournament. We pitched extremely well. I believe we allowed six runs and scored 24. Other than the Carl Junction game, in which we were no-hit by Payton Walker, we hit the ball well. We continued to improve on defense.”
The right-handed Simpson struck out three, walked three and hit a batter. He also had two hits and one RBI.
Millard’s blow, pulled into left center field, keyed a seven-run first inning against Carthage.
The Miners garnered 10 hits against McDonald County. Josh Miller delivered a three-run double in the third inning and Millard added a two-run double in the fourth.
Millard, another right-hander, didn’t struck out a batter but walked only two hit and hit a batter. Tanner Grab reached Millard for two safeties.
Brett Graham, who tripled, joined Bryce Ash and Gavin Jones with two hits against McDonald County.
