Carthage’s Jackie Dalton, who’s seeking a remarkable sixth USRA modified points championship at Springfield Raceway in seven years, won his second A feature of the season on Saturday night.
The 25-lap victory was worth $800. Dalton took the lead from Sparta’s Stephen Muilenburg on the 10th lap.
Dalton started seventh on the quarter-mile dirt after a redraw of the top eight drivers.
“The secret, in addition to being patient, was getting through turns 1 and 2,” Dalton said on Monday. “You had to drive straight — all on the bottom — on 1 and 2. Turns 3 and 4 were good on both the top and bottom.”
Joplin drivers John Yeoman and Dairan Hendrix finished second and third, respectively, Dalton said.
Completing the top six in the main event were Bobby Pearish of Oronogo, Muilenburg and Mitch Keeter of Webb City.
Dalton, the current points leader, won four titles in a row before Keeter took the crown in 2010. Dalton bounced back to win again last season.
Dalton, 39, believes he’s been driving a modified since the 1999 season. He began racing competitively at defunct Joplin 66 Speedway.
Dalton said he’s third nationally among some 750 drivers in USRA modified. He came back on Sunday night at the Monett Speedway to finish third in the main event behind Jesse Stovall of Galena (Mo.) and Muilenburg.
The Drakes — dad Scott and son Trevor — won main events in USRA B modified and Midwest Modz, respectively.
Justin Comer, besting fellow Joplin driver Billy Cottrill, won the Legends Cars main event on the first points show of the second half.
The other A feature winners were Bret Testerman, Miami, pure stock; Jim Reid, Springfield, street stock, and Wesley Smith, Nixa, Legends Young Lions.
The Midwest Modz will be featured on this week’s 7 p.m. second Rob Burgess Memorial presented by Garfield’s Restaurant & Pub. The winner of the Midwest Modz main event will receive $500 and making the start will pay $110.
