Late TD pass lifts Helias past Carthage

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Aaron Vossen’s 45-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Stiles with 48 seconds remaining rallied Helias Catholic past Carthage 20-17 Wednesday night in a Class 4 playoff game at Pete Adkins Stadium.

The Crusaders (7-4) ousted the Tigers for the second straight year and advance to Monday night’s second-round game at Webb City.

Carthage (7-4) built a 17-7 halftime advantage. Aaris Vogt kicked a 24-yard field goal late in the first quarter, and quarterback Jordan Musser connected for second-period touchdown passes covering 11 yards to Zach Strubberg and 63 yards to Seth Beckner. Helias blocked the extra point after the first score, but the Tigers added the 2-point conversion after Beckner’s TD on a pass from Sam Carlton to Jason Eckles.

Helias pulled within three points on Vossen’s six-yard pass to Woodruff midway through the third period.

Vossen’s game-winning pass to Stiles in the final minute capped a 284-yard passing performance as he completed 22 of 29. Woodruff caught nine passes for 115 yards, and Stiles had six for 88.

Beckner gained 93 yards on 23 carries for Carthage and caught four passes for 72 yards. Musser hit 8-of-17 passes for 121 yards. The Tigers had 220 yards total offense compared to Helias’ 317 yards.

Pleasant Hill 14, Monett 6

PLEASANT HILL, Mo. — Two big plays propelled Pleasant Hill past Monett in a defense-dominated Class 3 playoff contest played in steady rain.

Pleasant Hill’s Joe Griffith recovered a Cubs fumble in the end zone in the second quarter, and Josh Griffith added the 2-point conversion run for an 8-0 lead.

Monett’s bad field position came when the Roosters punted, and the ball was bouncing toward the end zone. But it hit the back judge, and Pleasant Hill was able to down it at the 4. The Cubs lost one yard on first down, then a bad snap on second down went in the end zone and was recovered by Joe Griffith.

The Cubs scored later in the second period on Tyler Green’s seven-yard run, but the conversion run failed.

Monett threatened to claim the lead late in the first half but on third down-and-2 from the Pleasant Hill 5, an apparent first-down run was nullified by a holding penalty, and the Cubs could not convert.

The Roosters returned the second-half kickoff almost to midfield, and on the first play, fullback Clint Richardson went 51 yards for the touchdown. It was Richardson’s only carry.

Hank Hudson gained 102 yards on 14 carries for Pleasant Hill (8-3), which plays Monday night at Cassville. The Roosters gained 175 yards on 34 rushes and did not attempt a pass.

Aaron Hall had 24 carries for 48 yards for Monett (5-6). Kurran Blamey and Green had 36 and 35 yards, respectively, as the Cubs finished with 119 yards on 50 carries. Monett was 0-for-2 passing with one interception.
