Mount Vernon, Fair highlight sectional golf performances

— Mount Vernon’s team championship and a round of par-72 by Monett’s Jacob Fair headlined area performances Wednesday at MSHSAA sectional golf tournaments.

The top two teams in each sectional advance to the state tournament along with the top 12 individuals plus ties who are not members of the qualifying team.

A total of 20 area golfers — Mount Vernon’s five-man team plus 15 individual entries — earned tickets to state.

State tournaments will be played May 14-15 at four courses in the Springfield area — Class 4 at Silo Ridge in Bolivar, Class 3 at Rivercut in Springfield, Class 2 at Twin Oaks in Springfield and Class 1 at Fremont Hills in Nixa.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Garrett Roberts of Carthage shot an 81 at Millwood Golf and Racquet Club to tie for eighth place.

Joplin’s Griffen Locke and Nick Yuhas and Carthage’s Kole Borland all shot 84s, just one shot from the state tourney cut. Lucas Garritson of Joplin shot 97.

William Echelmeier of team champion Columbia Rock Bridge and Mitch Mather of Lebanon shared medalist honors with 2-over-par 72s.

Class 3 Sectional 3

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Fair, a senior from Monett, matched par-72 at Briarbrook Golf Course to claim medalist honors.

Ethan Hutcheson of Carl Junction was second with 75, and Webb City’s Ben Starkey and Fulton’s Justin Vann tied for third with 77s

Also advancing to state were Carl Junction’s Nic Smith (80), Cassville’s Evan White (80), Seneca’s Bradley Jumper (81) and Nevada’s Joseph Ferry (84).

Rogersville (334) and Bolivar (347) claimed the team state berths. Monett was third with 350, and Nevada fourth with 375.

Class 2 Sectional 3

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Mount Vernon’s 327 total was 16 shots in front of runner-up Springfield Catholic at the Bill and Payne Stewart Golf Course.

David Rhoden led the Mountaineers with an 81, followed by Korey Pryer 83, Eric Wilmoth 84, Tripper Jensen 87 and Christian Kay 95.

Diamond’s Jake Tuter shot 79 to tie for second place with Ava’s Tristan Haltom and Ash Grove’s Sean Mulkey. Ian Barnes of Licking shot 1-over-par 73 to run away with medalist honors.

Lamar, which finished third in the team standings with 350, qualified three individuals — Logan McArthur 85, Kealon Cox 89 and Caleb Fischer 89.

Class 1 Sectional 3

EUGENE, Mo. — Phillip Roller of Purdy shot 82 at Redfield Golf Course to tie for third place, one shot behind co-medalists David Baldwin of Sedalia Sacred Heart and Trevor Warlen of Windsor.

Jonathan Shumaker of Thomas Jefferson (84) and Connor Schlegel of McAuley Catholic (90) also qualified for state, and Ivan Crossland of Thomas Jefferson missed state by one shot.

Sacred Heart won team honors with 337, followed by Tipton 349, Drexel 350, Purdy 379, McAuley 383 and College Heights 397.
