Rain, lightning cancel Southern Stampede

The Missouri Southern Stampede cross country race was canceled Saturday afternoon, after five hours of weather delay caused by heavy rain and continued lightning.

The Lions had attracted 49 teams in the university division, including several Division I entrants. There were 57 schools entered in the high school division.

The meet drew 2,000 runners in 2010.

Early arrivals were initially dispatched to storm shelters when competition was delayed at approximately 8:15 a.m. Saturday, about 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the university women’s race.

Competition was tentatively set to start at 10 a.m., then at noon. The day’s races, the scheduled were called off about 1:30 p.m.

Missouri Southern athletes will resume competition on Oct. 1 at the Oklahoma State Jamboree in Stillwater.
