— The Price Cutter Charity Championship continues to grow.

The purse for this year’s tournament, scheduled Aug. 8-11 at Highland Springs Country Club, is a record $675,000, a $50,000 increase over the previous three years. The winner will receive $121,500. By comparison, the first champion won around $30,000 in 1990.

Even without the higher paychecks, a strong field is guaranteed for this event, the 19th stop on the Tour’s 21-tournament schedule.

Under the new format this year, the Tour is the path to the PGA Tour. All 50 cards to the big tour will come through the Tour in two ways.

The top 25 players on the regular-season money list are assured a PGA Tour card.

Another 25 cards will be awarded to the top 25 finishers in the four-tournament Tour Championship during September. The championship series will begin with a 150-man field — the top 75 players on the Tour money list and players 126-200 in FedEx Cup points on the PGA Tour.

The Price Cutter Charity Classic is one of only four tournaments that has been a part all 24 years of the Tour and its predecessors — Ben Hogan Tour (1990-92), Nike Tour (1993-99), Tour (2000-02) and Nationwide Tour (2003-12).

Proceeds from the tournament will be given to more than 40 children’s charities in the Ozarks region. Last year more than $800,000 was distributed to 46 children’s charities, pushing the 23-year total past $10 million.

During the tournament’s annual media day, Jerald Andrews announced there was still a need for several volunteers, in particular course marshals and walking scorers.

Persons wanting to volunteer can fill out the volunteer form on the tournament’s web site
