Brian Wuest’s run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Joplin past Clarinda 3-2, giving the Outlaws a split in the MINK League doubleheader at Joe Becker Stadium.
Kyle Dickens grounded a single into right field to start the Outlaws’ eighth and moved to second on Enrique Finol’s sacrifice. Wuest, who played this spring at Nebraska-Kearney, followed with his double to left-center field.
Austin McLain went 2-for-3 and drove in the Outlaws’ first two runs before Clarinda tied it with two runs in the fifth. Matt Truner, Dickens and Logan Bradley also had two hits for Joplin.
The A’stallied five runs in the second inning en route to an 8-3 victory in the first game.
Clarinda collected 15 hits off four Joplin pitchers in the first game. Cory Raley, the No. 9 hitter, went 3-for-4 to pace Clarinda. Dominick Francia, DMarco Poindexter, Blake Trahan, Keith Cormier and Dean Long contributed two hits apiece, and Long drove in two runs.
Clarinda’s second-inning spree opened a 7-0 advantage.
Raley’s double to right-center field started the inning, and Francia followed with a triple. A single by Poindexter, double by Bud Britt, single by Cormier and groundout by Adam Baymude plated the final four runs of the innings.
The A’s added another run in the fourth before the Outlaws scored all of their runs in the sixth.
Turner, Koby Chadick and Max Ayoub drove in one run apiece for Joplin. The Outlaws had a total of five hits — a double by Turner and singles by Chadick, Ryan Rippee, Bradley and Zach Barton.
