Drury scores early, nips Missouri Southern

Panthers get three in first, hike winning streak to 15

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Drury scored three runs in the first inning and defeated Missouri Southern 4-3 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday night at Meador Park.

Drury starter Ryan Colombo (3-1) allowed eight hits, walked none and struck out five. Gage Jacobs pitched the ninth inning for his third save.

Missouri Southern’s Brandon Weller was 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run, and shortstop Jared Lupo was 2-for-3 and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Lions starter Skylar Hill (3-1) took the loss. He allowed five hits in six innings, walked two and struck out two. Kanon Hoover pitched two innings of scoreless relief.

Drury (21-7) extended its winning streak to 15 games.

Missouri Southern (20-16) will face Northeastern State in the first game of a four-game MIAA series at 6 p.m. Friday at Joe Becker Stadium.

The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Beau Phillips and Matt Smith singled, Logan Moon grounded into a force play at second base, and Axel Johnson’s grounder to third scored Phillips. Brett Graham followed with a single to left field that drove in Moon.

Missouri Southern added a run in the sixth inning on Weller’s one-out double, a single by Zack Steadman and Lupo’s sacrifice fly.

Drury’s three-run first inning began with a double by Colton Jones, a bunt single by Cole Faulconer and Nick Thimesch’s RBI single into left field. With two outs, Bobby Lang drove in two runs with a single up the middle.

Drury took a 4-2 lead with an unearned run in the fourth inning.
