Lopers' big seventh beats Lions in series opener

Brandon Landanger hit a two-run home run in Nebraska-Kearney’s four-run seventh inning and the Antelopes defeated Missouri Southern 5-2 Thursday night at Memorial Field.

The game was the first of a four-game MIAA baseball series. The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader at 3 p.m. today and a single game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Second baseman Brandon Weller had two of the Lions’ seven hits.

Starting pitcher David Reese (4-6) allowed six hits and a walk in seven innings. He struck out six.

Kearney’s Alex Sosa (1-1) allowed six hits, walked one and struck out seven. Joe Smidt pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 10th save.

Jayke Brock started Kearney’s seventh inning when he reached first on an error and advanced to third on Josh Kiger’s double to left. One out later, Brent Kirsch drove in two runs with a single to center field. Landanger, who was 2-for-4, followed with a home run to right field.

The Antelopes (28-16, 22-15 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a leadoff home run by Anthony Pacheco, who came into the game batting .416.

The Lions (23-24, 16-21) tied the game with a run in the third inning when Logan Moon hit a one-out single, stole second and scored on Axel Johnson’s single to right field.

MSSU took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Jared Lupo’s two-out RBI double down the right-field line that drove in Matt Smith, who had doubled.

Drew Noble pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief of Reese.
