PREP ROUNDUP: Cards, Eagles win league openers

Webb City, fueled by Phoenix Johnson’s 29 points, dominated the second half and defeated Ozark 69-55 Tuesday night in a Central Ozark Conference Large Division boys basketball opener.

The Cardinals (9-3) trailed 32-25 at halftime but outscored the Tigers 23-12 in the third quarter and 21-11 in the final eight minutes.

Kohl Slaughter and John Roderique tallied 13 and 12 points, respectively, to join Johnson in double figures.

Brett Krisik netted 24 points for Ozark.

The Cardinals play a nonconference game on Friday night at Lebanon. The freshman game will begin at 4:30.

Joplin boys 79, Lebanon 51

LEBANON, Mo. — The Eagles, after placing second in their Kaminsky Classic last weekend, rolled past Lebanon in their Ozark Conference opener.

The Eagles (7-3) continue league play Friday against Camdenton at Missouri Southern’s Young Gymnasium.

Verona boys 45, Thomas Jefferson 38

Verona survived a fourth-quarter rally by Thomas Jefferson and defeated the host Cavaliers .

The Wildcats led 35-30 going into the fourth quarter, but Thomas Jefferson tied the score at 37 with 2 minutes, 50 seconds to play.

“They hit a couple of shots in the fourth quarter and we had a couple of costly turnovers,” said Thomas Jefferson coach Chris Myers. “Our kids did a good job of battling back, they just didn’t have enough time in the end.”

Tyler Thurman sank five 3-pointers and led the Cavaliers with 19 points. Thomas Estada led the Wildcats with 15 points and Seth Losack scored 12 points.

Pierce City boys 51, College Heights 26

PIERCE CITY, Mo. — Cody Fitchpatrick fired in 28 points as Pierce City squared its records at 6-6 overall and 1-1 in Spring River Valley Conference play.

The Eagles extended a 12-8 first-quarter lead to 25-12 at the intermission and 43-14 after three periods.

Josh Woodmansee paced College Heights with 12 points.

Seneca beats Webb City


SENECA, Mo. — Seneca posted six pins in beatng Webb City 50-24 in a prep wrestling dual on Tuesday night.

Indians with pins were Will Roark at 120 pounds, Butch Ferguson at 152, Jalen Skaggs at 160, Jeff Butler at 182, Dylan West at 195 and Devin Madison at 220. Also, Quentin Cotten won by technical fall at 113 for the Indians.

Webb City received pins from Samuel Robertson, Alex Lane and Tony Carranco.

Seneca, 6-1 in duals, visits Joplin on Thursday night.
