CHANUTE, Kan. —
Fueled by Charlie Brown’s 31 points, Joplin rallied in the second half and edged Chanute 60-56 Saturday afternoon in the fifth-place game of the Ralph Miller Classic in the Blue Comets’ gymnasium.
Chanute tallied 20 points in the second quarter to take a 30-21 halftime lead, then extended its lead before Joplin battled back. The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 42-38 after three quarters, then outscored the Blue Comets 22-14 in the final eight minutes.
“When they got up 14 in the third quarter, we changed defenses and went to a half-court trap,” Joplin coach Jeff Williams said. “Once we got the momentum, it was our ball game from there. I thought we had control of the game even though we were not in the lead. I thought they were rattled.
“Our kids showed a lot of grit. Chanute was on fire. This is the best Chanute team in eight or nine years.”
Brown scored nine of his points in the fourth quarter. Abe Hueller contributed 10 points for the Eagles.
