Eagles handle Blue Comets in tournament

CHANUTE, Kan. — Fueled by Charlie Brown’s 31 points, Joplin rallied in the second half and edged Chanute 60-56 Saturday afternoon in the fifth-place game of the Ralph Miller Classic in the Blue Comets’ gymnasium.

Chanute tallied 20 points in the second quarter to take a 30-21 halftime lead, then extended its lead before Joplin battled back. The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 42-38 after three quarters, then outscored the Blue Comets 22-14 in the final eight minutes.

“When they got up 14 in the third quarter, we changed defenses and went to a half-court trap,” Joplin coach Jeff Williams said. “Once we got the momentum, it was our ball game from there. I thought we had control of the game even though we were not in the lead. I thought they were rattled.

“Our kids showed a lot of grit. Chanute was on fire. This is the best Chanute team in eight or nine years.”

Brown scored nine of his points in the fourth quarter. Abe Hueller contributed 10 points for the Eagles.

Rams, Bears champions

SARCOXIE, Mo. — Riverton’s girls and the host Bears are champions in the annual Sarcoxie tournament.

In girls division, Riverton nudged Jasper 45-43 in the championship game, Exeter clipped McAuley Catholic 24-22 for third and Sarcoxie defeated College Heights 54-39 for fifth among the six teams.

Justin Myers, a 6-2 junior, scored 40 points as Sarcoxie finished 3-0 in the boys round robin by handling College Heights 78-44.

Exeter’s boys, a final 2-1 in the tourney for second place, defeated Mount Vernon B 39-32.

College Heights’ boys were 1-2 and Mount Vernon B 0-3.

The Sarcoxie boys led CHC 37-28 at the half. Garett Triplett added 11 points for the Bears and Josh Woodmansee tallied 19 for CHC.

Myers scored 14 in the third period to key the Bears’ 25-7 advantage.

Hanna White tallied 17 points for the Riverton girls. Elizabeth Maneval scored 16 for Jasper and Morgan Winchester 11.

Rayanna Fare scored 11 points for Exeter. Bethany Bloss paced Sarcoxie with 18.

Thomas Jefferson boys 42, Northeast 34

LIBERAL, Mo. — Justin Brown scored 20 points as Thomas Jefferson defeated the Northeast Vikings on Friday night in the consolation bracket of the Tony Dubray Classic at Liberal.

Leading 18-15 at halftime, Thomas Jefferson took control in the third quarter by outscoring Northeast 13-4. Brown scored 11 of his 20 points in the quarter.

Antonio Slinghuff led Northeast with 12 points.

Wrestling

Joplin’s Hollingshead places second

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Don Hollingshead, a senior, placed second in the 152-pound class to highlight Joplin High School’s wrestling effort in the Hickman Tournament held Friday and Saturday.

Hollingshead, 24-7 overall, lost 9-2 in the finals to Cedar Hill Northwest’s J.T. Tuck.

The Eagles’ Danny Drouin, also a senior, finished fourth at 220. He’s 11-4 this season.

The Eagles also placed Zach Phillips eighth at 112, Skye Paulk eighth at 126, Keegan Loyd sixth at 132, Landon Taylor fifth at 182, Jason Love eighth at 195 and Phillip Reitz fifth at 285.

Joplin, 2-6 in duals, nipped visiting Kickapoo 39-38 on Thursday as Phillips, Hollingshead, Taylor, Love and Reitz logged pins.
