Prep roundup: Joplin golf earns spot in sectionals

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Second place in the Class 4 District 6 Tournament. Nick Yuhas the medalist.

Little wonder that Joplin High School golf coach Jack Pace was in a cheery mood on Monday.

“We had a good performance,” Pace said. “Taking the whole team to the next round is pretty nice.”

Yuhas, a junior, shot a 1-over-par 72 at the Carthage Gold Course to beat Ozark’s Miles Aduddell and Republic’s Dylan Bekemeier by three shots for individual honors.

Joplin’s Griffen Locke shot 76 for fourth place. Carthage’s Austin Bunnell shot a 79 seventh.

Kickapoo (318) relegated the Eagles (327) to runner-up in the 10-team event.

Top two teams and top 25 individuals, plus members of the top two teams, advance to sectional competition at 9 a.m. next Monday at Eagle Knoll Golf Course.

Other scores for Joplin were 84 for Austin Garritson, 94 for Tamerik Branham and 95 for Chance Sticklen.

Said Yuhas: “I had a rough start, but I was pretty solid overall the whole round.”

Yuhas said he had consecutive bogeys on 11 and 12 (his second and third holes) before rebounding. He closed out the 18 holes with a birdie.

Carthage and Neosho finished fourth and ninth in team scores with 334 and 356, respectively.

BASEBALL

Webb City tops Joplin in seventh

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Kyler Crane’s two-out bloop hit drove home Austin Carter from first base with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and Webb City beat Joplin 7-6.

Carter reached on an error and then was able to score from first when Crane’s hit to shallow right eluded a diving right fielder.

Crane’s double off the wall in right earlier in the game had Joplin’s outfield playing deep.

Webb City erased a 5-1 deficit with a five-run fourth inning before Joplin knotted the game at six in the sixth.

Austin White had two doubles and finished with three hits, as did Joplin’s Chris Leonardi.

The Cardinals — 5-14 and winners of their last three — are at Neosho today at 4:30 p.m.
