Former NFL star Gordon to be assistant coach for Pittsburg State

The Pittsburg State Gorillas football team has added a significant amount of experience to its coaching staff.

While Darrien Gordon has not coached before, he brings with him the experience of nine NFL seasons and four Super Bowl appearances.

The former defensive back and punt returner for the San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers will help coach Pittsburg State’s secondary this fall. He is joining the Gorillas through the NFLPA/NCAA Coaching Internship Program, which helps former NFL players break into coaching at NCAA Division II or III schools.

“For myself and other former NFL players, this is a great program to give us the opportunity to pursue a coaching career,” Gordon said in a news release. “Being away from the active game of football for 10 years, this is a unique opportunity to start fresh and recharge the thinking process. Some players pursue coaching immediately after retiring. Others either choose to spend time with family or pursue other interests ... This is an exciting new chapter in my life.”

Gordon competed in the NFL from 1993-2002, except for 1995 when he missed the entire season with a shoulder injury. He was named first-team all-conference by Pro Football Weekly in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2001. He received first-team all-NFL honors by the Sporting News and the Pro Football Writers in 1997. Gordon finished his NFL career with 19 interceptions and six return touchdowns.

He competed in four Super Bowls, helping the Denver Broncos win the Vince Lombardi Trophy twice.

“We are very excited to have Darrien join our coaching staff for the 2013 season,” Pittsburg State coach Tim Beck said in a release. “Not only does his playing career speak for itself, but Darrien is a tremendous person. He will be a great asset to our coaching staff and our players.”

He played collegiately at Stanford and was drafted 22nd overall by San Diego in 1993.

A native of Shawnee, Okla., Gordon earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford in 2007.
