Ozark Christian earns repeat trip to nationals

Ozark Christian College is going back to the women’s national volleyball tournament for the second straight year.

The host Ambassadors (33-5) defeated Hillsdale Baptist of Oklahoma City 25-11, 25-9, 25-23 Saturday in the final of the National Christian College Athletic Association Division II Southwest Regional. The win moves OCC into the 10-team national tourney Nov. 13-14 at Kissimmee, Fla.

“Our play in this regional shows we are peaking at the right time and we hope to keep that momentum going into the nationals,” said OCC assistant coach Tim Hedger.

Hillsdale, earlier Saturday, defeated Southwestern Christian from Bethany, Okla., 25-13, 25-15, 25-23 to reach the final in the three-team regional.

Reilly Allmoslecher, who led OCC in the championship match with eight kills and 13 assists, was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Other Ambassadors selected for tournament first team honors were Chrissy Lahm and Brittany Owen. Lahm had six kills, five digs and three service aces, while Owen had eight kills, nine digs and two solo blocks in the championship match. OCC’s Melea Cook was selected honorable mention.

The Ambassadors finished ninth in the national tourney last year.

Southern romps

Missouri Southern swept past Missouri Western 3-0 in an MIAA match at Young Gymnasium.

The Lions, who hit .302, won 25-23, 25-19, 25-22.

Freshman Renee Rheinecker had 18 kills and hit .519 to lead the Lions, 12-16 overall and 5-9 in the conference. Brittany Vavao-Huggins had 11 kills and hit .667, with just one error in 15 attempts.

Elin Skei had 43 assists for Southern. Kari Hammerbacher and Ali Boehler had eight digs each. Vavao-Huggins had five block assists and Jeanna Feldmann added four.

Western (9-20, 2-14) received 13 kills each from Kelli Sicner and Meghan Voelz.

Southern entertains No. 6-ranked Washburn at 7 p.m. Friday in another MIAA match.

Truman State beat the Lions 3-0 Friday night, winning 25-23, 25-21, 27-25.

Rheineker and Feldmann had 10 kills each, Skei 33 assists and Hammerbacher and Boehler nine digs each.

SOCCER

Lions blanked

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Andrea Tritz scored late in the first half and Northwest Missouri made the goal stand up for a 1-0 victory in MIAA play.

The Lions, 4-14 overall and 2-12 in the conference, were blanked for the seventh straight game.

Tritz scored unassisted at the 43:19 mark. Northwest, 11-6-1 and 7-6-1, outshot the Lions 14-6.

Southern will play is final home game at 6 p.m. Thursday, at Bodon Field, against Washburn.
