MARSHFIELD, Mo. — The fourth-seeded Webb City Cardinals scored their goals in the first half in ousting Carl Junction 3-1 in a first-round game of the Class 2 District 5 soccer tournament on Saturday.
Sophomores Jeremy Heuertz, Alex Christian and Austin Sanders scored for Webb City. Sanders’ goal came off a free kick from about 60 yards.
Webb City statistics had the shots even at 15. Thomas Foster logged 13 saves for the Cardinals and Nii K. Abrahams had nine for Carl Junction.
The Bulldogs received their tally in the second half from Brandon Kennedy.
Webb City (12-11), which beat Carl Junction 2-1 earlier this season, will challenge top-seeded Bolivar at 4:30 p.m. on Monday in a semifinal.
Bolivar escaped West Plains 3-2 on penalty kicks. No. 2 Cassville trimmed Rogersville 6-2 and Marshfield knocked off third-seeded Monett 3-0.
Eighth-seeded West Plains defeated Aurora 5-0 on Friday in the nine-team tourney.
Joplin teams ousted
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — College Heights and Thomas Jefferson were eliminated from the Class 1 District 6 Tournament by Springfield schools.
Greenwood, seeded second and improving to 18-4-1, beat Thomas Jefferson 9-1. Fourth-seeded New Covenant tripped College Heights 4-1.
Joe Blake scored two goals for New Covenant, which led 2-0 at the half.
Brantly Gossett had the goal for the Cougars six minutes into the second half. Evan Belk posted 11 saves for College Heights (7-17).
Laquey ousted third-seeded Richland 6-1 in another first-round match.
