Roughton earns

all-state honors

ST. PETERS, Mo. — Webb City’s Matt Roughton is an all-stater in two events after preliminaries in the annual MSHSAA Boys Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at the City of St. Peters Rec-Plex.

Roughton, a senior, had the fourth fastest time in the 50 freestyle with 21.34, Cardinal coach Shawn Klosterman said. Roughton’s time of 47.65 in the 100 free was third best.

Roughton advances to finals — those eight swimmers receive all-state recognition — in each event at 3 p.m.

“He’s worked very hard and improved a lot,” Klosterman said of Roughton. “He’s improved his times in each event by more than a second since last season.”

Roughton’s time in the 50 free trailed the Rockhurst’s Jonathan Benson (20.99), Kickapoo’s Ryan McFall (21.10) and Rockhurst’s Matthew Margritier (21.10).

Nixa’s Niklas Brinck had a 45.79 to pace the 100 free. Margritier clocked 46.24 in front of Roughton.

Webb City’s Eli Swaim, a junior, will compete today at 9:30 a.m. in the one-meter diving competition.

Rockhurst and Kickapoo finished 1-2 in the team standings last season with 314.5 and 239, respectively.

6-foot-1 post player

signs with Southern

Kalie Lucis, a 6-foot-1 post player from Harrah, Okla., signed a letter-of-intent on Friday to play basketball at Missouri Southern.

Lucis has played for three straight Class 5A regional championship teams. Last season, she finished second in the state in field goal percentage and was also named her team’s outstanding defensive player. She is Harrah’s career blocked shot leader.

“We are excited to add Kalie to our basketball program,” said Southern coach Maryann Mitts. “Our ability to sign high school seniors with Kalie’s caliber will help build a strong cornerstone for our future. At 6-1, she has great size and will provide versatility and athleticism at our small forward position.”

Higgins, Simmons

win regional honors

NEOSHO, Mo. — Crowder College sophomores Chris Higgins and Rafael Simmons have been named to the NJCAA All-Region XVI Team in soccer.

Simmons, from Bristol, England, was named to the first team. Higgins, Glasgow, Scotland, is on the second team.

The Roughriders, in their second year of soccer, reached the regional semifinals in the playoffs for the second season.

Said Crowder coach Brad Smith: “I’m very happy for these players. They consistently have been among our best players and have helped lay a foundation for the future of the program.”

Pleasant Hope tops

tournament seeds

LOCKWOOD, Mo. — Pleasant Hope defeated Billings 77-76 for the basketball championship of the boys Lockwood Dennis Cornish Invitational last season.

This year, they are seeded 1-2 for the tourney scheduled Nov. 30-Dec. 5.

Lamar and Jasper are seeded third and fourth, respectively.

Games on Nov. 30 are College Heights challenging No. 1 Pleasant Hope at 6:30 p.m. and Liberal testing Jasper at 8.

It’s Golden City tackling Billings at 6:30 p.m. and Lockwood tackling Lamar at 8 on Dec. 1.

The seventh-place contest at 4 p.m. will open the finals schedule on Dec. 5.

Turkey Classic set

at Springfield track

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Springfield Raceway is gearing up for its season finale on Nov. 28 — the third Turkey Classic at 2 p.m.

The open late model class will headline the program at the quarter-mile clay track with a $2,000 to win and $200 to start main event.

Support classes are modified, sport mod and Legends Cars.

Grandstand admission prices are $15 and $5 (ages 6-12). A pit pass is $35. Pit gates open at 10 a.m. with hot laps at 1 p.m.
